Coupon Affiliates are stealing from you

Apparently now in the UK 1 out of every 200 visits to an online retail site comes from a Voucher/Coupon Code website. As this type of traffic is increasing year on year, your hard earned affiliate commissions could be getting flushed down the drain when your cookie is overwritten by these rogue practices.

How it Works

Many of the big voucher websites have one incredibly sneaky way of overwriting your hard earned cookie (There are legit ones out there that do things by the book, but I’m not naming names here).

So in order to even view the discount codes you first need to click on the button to reveal them, this opens up a popunder which sets a new cookie, overwriting yours. Now this is where it starts to get very very sneaky.

When you have a large database driven site it’s very easy to start creating pages around every merchant / site known to man that has an affiliate program (regardless of whether they have voucher codes or not), some sites have to do this manually others can do it on the fly. They then start optimising the pages for “Merchant Name Vouchers, Discount Codes & Coupons.”

So here’s now a typical scenario:

You send a customer to the merchant via your affiliate redirect
Customer sees a nice shiny laptop & decide to buy
They get to the checkout & see the merchant has a “coupon code field”
Their eyebrows raise ever so slightly & they type “merchant coupon codes” into Google
Up pops one of the Voucher Code sites with a nice shiny button similar to that above
But….low & behold there’s no coupon codes.
The voucher website has STILL overwritten your cookie though.

This is what pisses me off the most, people are ready to buy, ready to commit. Yet you have you sale stolen from you at the last minute (seemingly without any effort).

Networks are turning a blind eye

One of the UK’s large voucher websites last year reported they sent over $250,000,000 worth of sales through to merchants. With this type of volume the networks are turning a blind eye & letting these sites get away with stealing YOUR commissions.

What is the Role of an Affiliate?

It seems this varies considerably, but here’s a few thoughts (I’d like to know yours also):

What can be done to combat this problem?

There’s four solutions to this that I can think of:

I look very carefully before promoting some merchants now, if they have a coupon discount field it’s a big RED FLAG for me.
Ban the offending affiliates from Networks
Disable the overwriting of Affiliate Cookies
Credit the Affiliate that sends the consumer to the purchase page before the affiliate that provides the coupon.

Ebay lays the Smackdown on the sale of Digital Items

If you’ve ever been on ebay you’ll no doubt have seen this:

Or the thousands of other Digital Products that are being sold every day.

Ebay has introduced new guidelines that from the 31st March 2008 ban the sale of any Digital Products from normal listings that can be downloaded right away, they must now be advertised under the Classified Ad format (which is useless imo).

Using the Classified Ads format, sellers receive a 30-day ad at a fixed price. This solution enables sellers to continue to market their digital goods on eBay; however, because Classified Ad listings are a lead generation tool and do not result in transactions that go through eBay, Feedback cannot be exchanged between buyer and seller.

This change will include anything that can be downloaded or transferred electronically, i.e.

eBooks
MP3′s
Digital Videos
Websites
Domain Names
Graphic Design Services
Photo Services
And any other service that can be delivered electronically

This change is going to put a lot of people who depend on selling digital products on ebay for a solid income in serious trouble. Naturally there’s probably ways around this change, like physically shipping products, but that’s a pain if you’re used to everything being automated.

However I also think that the change is a good thing for Ebay. I’ve seen too many people get ripped off with Domain Names & Website packages just because they didn’t know any better.

Ebay ditches Commission Junction

If you’re familiar with the Ebay affiliate program you’ll also be very familiar with Commission Junction. These two have gone hand in hand with each other like Strawberry’s & Cream for as long as I can remember. The program has also been a very very consistent earner for me over the years.

But in a move that really didn’t take me by surprise, Ebay have decided now to take the Affiliate Management & Reporting in house with the creation of the Ebay Partner Network, a global affiliate management network encompassing all of the Ebay sites into one manageable interface:

Easy global registration to multiple countries simultaneously
New, targeted banners and rich media creatives
New landing page optimization and geo-targeting capabilities
More detailed reporting capabilities for eBay’s programs

Now you’ll be able to promote every Ebay localisation without having to go through the sign up process for each, which will allow for much more diversification in who you target & also allow you to Geo Target regions you may not have been able to before. The network also takes out the middleman when it comes to support & affiliate issues.

I’m keen to see the new reporting features, as the current ones provided over at CJ are extremely limited, unless you download the daily report via .csv. I’m also interested to see if they provide Geo Targeted ad blocks (similar to what Auctionads was doing).

My heart goes out to Commission Junction, I can’t imagine how much of a hit losing Ebay will have on their bottom line, but the move makes sense. eBay’s Tradera AB, ProStores, Inc, Reseller Marketplace, Media Marketplace, eBay Stores & StubHub will however continue with CJ as normal so all is not lost.

The network opens on April 1st 2008 & all links must be migrated over by May 1st 2008. If you migrate over in April you’ll get a 5% bonus to all traffic for that month only.I’ll report more info when I get it & expect a full review of the new interface & reporting when I get access.

The US Dollar is Hurting Affiliates, But Which Ones?

If you’re like me then I’m sure you’ve been feeling the pain of the falling Dollar over the past few years. Affiliates that participate in programs that pay in American Dollars are now having to work up to 20% harder to make as much money in their home currency as they were just 2 years ago. Even worse, if you’ve been in this game for anywhere up to 5 years, you will have seen close to a 50% drop in the exchange rate.

If the drop continues, more & more affiliates will either start to look for homegrown affiliate programs, or programs paying in more stable currencies (like the CAD, AUD or EUR).

I did a slight bit of analysis to see which Affiliates have been hit hardest by the falling Dollar:

Australians

Now: 1USD = 1.07663AUD
1 year ago: 1USD = 1.30112AUD
2 years ago: 1USD = 1.3641AUD
5 years ago: 1USD = 2.8139AUD

Percentage Profit Drop:

2 years: 21.07%
5 years: 61.73%

Canadians

Now: 1USD = 0.92967CAD
1 year ago: 1USD = 1.12928CAD
2 years ago: 1USD = 1.18547CAD
5 years ago: 1USD = 1.56520CAD

For some reason the charting tool wouldn’t allow me to inverse the USD/CAD graph, either way it still looks fairly grim.

Percentage Profit Drop:

2 years: 21.57%
5 years: 40.6%

Euro

Now: 1USD = 0.67971EUR
1 year ago: 1USD = 0.77911EUR
2 years ago: 1USD = 0.8514EUR
5 years ago: 1USD = 0.9870EUR

Percentage Profit Drop:

2 years: 20.16%
5 years: 31.13%

UK

Now: 1USD = 0.47350GBP

Percentage Profit Drop:

Canadian Affiliates have been worst hit over the past 2 years with a 21.57% drop in earnings. Which means that for every $100,000 USD they earn, they are earning $21,570 USD less than 2 years ago. Quite a significant drop.

Australian Affiliates have seen the largest long term drop of a huge 61.73% over the past 5 years (Here’s hoping that this doesn’t continue).

India

India is one of the few countries that Affiliate Marketers are profiting from the falling US Dollar, however this in turn means that the cost of outsourcing to India is also increasing.

Google’s Geographical Changes & Affiliate Marketing

Google has launched a nifty new feature that allows you to set a Geographic target to help you focus your website on a particular area & region anywhere in the world.

It’s accessible from within Webmaster Tools under the Tools / Set Geographic Target.

So what does this mean for Affiliate Marketers?

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is we can now build huge niche sites & specifically target certain subdomains to different regions & countries.

This pretty much ties in well with my last Local Directory post, I mentioned that once your site was up & running you could then branch out into different cities within Australia:

melbourne.yoursite.com.au
sydney.yoursite.com.au
perth.yoursite.com.au
adelaide.yoursite.com.au
brisbane.yoursite.com.au

Each subdomain can have it’s own Webmaster Tools Account, so in theory you are able to set the region for each of your subdomains separately. Giving each subdomain more exposure in the areas you want it to been seen in.

What are the Benefits?

The main benefit is that you can now target the Australian market without strictly buying a .com.au or target the UK market without buying a .co.uk domain name. Simply by setting the targeting in Webmaster Tools.

What are the Drawbacks?

It’s still too early to tell how setting this option will effect overall traffic. If you run a local site that doesn’t need any international traffic you may see a boost in Local Rankings, which in turn could mean more profits. However, if you run a site that relies on International Traffic, then setting a locality may affect you negatively.

Naturally you still also have to be careful of duplicate content, just because you can target a site to different areas doesn’t mean you can just duplicate the existing content onto a subdomain then set the targetings. I bet that was one of the first things that popped into your head!

Ebay Affiliate Program Increasing Payout

And if I thought things couldn’t get any better. Ebay has announced new pricing changes to its affiliate program which willÂ have a very very positive impact on those of you currently doing well with Auctionads.

Current Tiers with Auctionads

$22 per Registered Signup
65% of Ebay Revenue

New Tiers with Auctionads

$35 per Registered Signup
75% of Ebay Revenue

Obviously this is a massive increase from Ebay & should only help Auctionads tighten their foothold as a very very viable income source for Affiliates. Perhaps even luring many away from Commission Junction since they can’t reach those higher teir payouts.

How to take advantage of this?

Think carefully about which types of sites would generate signups. Which types of niches would involve lots of trading on ebay?

Clickbank Tracking Problem Fixed

A while ago I reported on the death of clickbank & how they were getting their cookies nuked by Ie7 & Spybot.

With many affiliates jumping ship & moving to CPA Offers like Azoogleads something had to be done to rectify the problem.

As of last week Clickbank has implemented IP Based Tracking on Hoplinks, something that the affiliate industry has been using for about 4 years. This now means that sale tracking is almost 99% accurate even for people who have cookies disabled or blacklisted.

I have a good number of old Clickbank style sites that earn me a nice residual income, however I’ve noticed a 300% increase in sales since the start of May, which is promising. But what about the sales lost due to poor tracking (We’re talking $1,000′s)?

Adsense for Feeds, huge revenue potential for Google?

I was pondering today whilst looking at my feed subscribers & thinking that most of my regular readers would all read the blog from within their feed reader since I have the full feed turned on.

I’ve signed up to a few feed advertising services but have been fairly disappointed with Inventory.

I couldn’t really figure out why Adsense hadn’t adapted into this vertical yet, especially with feed readers becoming more & more popular. But wait! Low & behold it’s currently in beta testing. However it’s also full.

But the main issue I have with this, is that most feed subscribers will rarely click on Adsense ads anyway so why would they click on them in your feed posts?

Feedburner Ads avoid this problem by using a CPM (Cost per 1000 impressions) model which pay on every feed impression received. Such a model favours blogs that post often.

How do you feel about Advertising in Feeds?

Has this Affiliate taken things too far? Thoughts.

I was horrified when I came across this website earlier today which is trying to capatilise on the VA Tech Shootings that happened this morning.

I personally out of morale issues would never ever dream of using something like this to make money. Especially having the balls to ask people to send flowers to loved ones through an affiliate link.

I understand that writing about breaking events can be profitable, but when they involve death that’s where I draw the line.

Would you stoop this low?

The Death of Clickbank

The Clickbank debate has been roaring on a number of forums lately, Publishers are getting annoyed & a lot of people are starting to jump ship.

A number of rumours have surfaced about why sales are dropping, about why some big guns who regularly make sales every single day see periods of silence in their sales chart for no apparrent reason….

But lets face it, Clickbank is most probably fighting a losing battle unless they start taking on better quality products & services. Everyone has become savvy to most of the scams that were profitable on Clickbank:

Paid Surveys
Make Money Ebooks
“Free” Game & Movie Downloads
Zune & PSP Download Sites

I even doubt the legality of some of the above.

For those of you that are still pushing Clickbank hard here’s a wakeup call for you:

That’s a chart of clickbank.net (the server address that provides affiliate hoplinks) over the past 3 years. Traffic through hoplinks has fallen by around 65% since Mid 2006.

The days of making easy money from Clickbank are gone. Dead. Until they step up & offer:

A better tracking system that can track clickthrough & conversion data
A more reliant hoplink system that doesn’t lose cookie information

I personally don’t do any ppc advertising with them anymore, just organic. I can’t bring myself to waste money on advertising without no tracking then getting the same response when questioning stats & conversions.

Textlinkads now offering Post Level Advertising

This is actually something I’d thought about doing for a while after I saw Matt over at Net Business Blog sell them privately a few months ago. Unfortunately due to time constraints & management I never got around to implementing anything & as such never actually sold any post level ads.

More & more people now are valuing Deep Links over Front Page Links simply because of relevance. I’d rather have a deeply relevant link than a link on a homepage from a blog that bears no relevance to mine at all.

Textlinkads now allows you to increase your blog revenue even more by advertising at a Post Level. You can sell one ad per post that can be anywhere up to 80 characters long with a 150 character description.

It looks something like this:

If I was able to earn say $30+/month per post that would not only make me want to write longer & more advertisable posts but it would also finally help me give adsense the boot from this blog I reckon. Kontera is doing better on Earners Blog than Adsense at the moment although that’s for another post. I’m not entirely sure of pricing at the moment

In order to be eligable for this you need to register for Textlinkads or if you already have an account you just need to upgrade your WordPress plugin.

Internet Explorer 7 Nuking Clickbank Affiliate Links

Any Clickbank Affliates noticed their sales dropping lately? Well I’m certain that IE7 is the major problem. I tested out 5 hoplinks via IE7 earlier today & noticed this:

There’s two main reasons why the links are getting blocked by IE7.

If the site contains no privacy policy
Clickbank.net is a default blocked cookie in IE7

The biggest problem with this is that this option is turned on by DEFAULT so chances are anyone using Internet Explorer 7 will nuke the cookie & you’ll not get credit for the sale. I’m sure the merchants are laughing all the way to the bank now that you’re spending all this PPC cash to send them sales for FREE.

Last week on one of my more mainstream sites 1,452 people out of 5,274 were using IE7.

That’s a whopping 27%

This means that you’re losing 27% of any current clickbank sales.

Now I can hardly see Microsoft actioning anything & removing Clickbank from their list of blocked sites, so the pressure is on clickbank to either move their hoplinks off the .net domain to something else & use a 301 redirect so that affiliates don’t have to change all their hoplinks manually or risk losing their entire affiliate community because they’re pissed at losing over 25% of their current revenue to the Merchant.

Auctionads Looks Promising

Auction Ads was launched last week & promises to help bring a breath of fresh air for Adsense Users. Whilst I personally haven’t had too much time to test it as of yet I couldn’t help but take notice to this thread in digitalpoint.

The user who runs a site about trading cards, which incidentally is perfect for Auction Ads for a variety of reasons has currently been using YPN (Yahoo Publisher Network).

He’s averaging around 1000 clicks per day off 200,000 impressions & making roughly $800. So he decided to split test 50/50 YPN vs Auction Ads for a week to see how they would compare to each other.

As you can see from the picture above with roughly 500 clicks showing 50% of the time YPN is grossing $400 on the site.

Now have a look at the revenue from Auction Ads on the same day showing the other 50% of the time. $1,551.81. That’s an increase of $1,100. Quite impressive.

Obviously this will vary on a site to site basis depending on the theme & the type of products you are targeting. I can imagine tech & hobby related sites really making a killing with Auction Ads in comparison to Adsense.

I’ve changed a few sites over to Auction Ads just to test things out so if they prove more profitable than Adsense I’ll get rid of it completely (thank god ) Oh & if you refer publishers you’ll earn 2% of what they earn for 6 months. So imagine if you referred the guy in the thread, you’d be earning a tidy $24/month & $48/month if he removed YPN.

Wickedfire’s War on Make Money Ebooks

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Make Money Online ebooks that float around. I guess that was part of the reason I started this blog, I was never really satisfied with the information out there or didn’t want to see people like me pay $97 to find the same recycled ways of:

How to set up an Adwords Account
What is Adwords?
How to set up a CJ Account

If I wanted to buy a book about the Adwords Help Center then I’d print the whole load off on the work printer?

Anyway, don’t get me wrong I’m not totally against these books. If you’re an affiliate they sell like hotcakes & if you don’t promote them someone else will….right? Well that depends on whether your conscience will let you sell something you know is crap or not.

The sad fact is that people will always want to profit off someone else’s lack of knowledge. If knowledge is power that you can turn into something profitable then many people will jump at the opportunity.

However, it has become apparrent that many of the Ebooks floating around now are merely ripoffs of old books & rehashed techniques that really offer no value or promises beyond that of their sales letter.

Well Jon from Wickedfire has decided enough is enough. Down with the EBook Scams once & for all.

I for one am very pleased that he is exposing some of these books for what they really are. For example, he posted some new book called Duvet Dollars which is currently selling for $97. I can honestly say that this is one of the worst examples of an Affiliate Marketing Ebook I have ever seen since Affiliate Cash Vault. I would more call it a tutorial on how to set up an Adwords account & promote Clickbank Products than a guide to riches.
Some people out there may find this useful, but I doubt the demographic that this book is aimed at will be able to make the $900/day the author claims you can make.

It’s the false claims that personally piss me off the most. The Ebook writers post shots of their clickbank stats with long bars of $500/day or whatever but fail to mention that those bars are actually from affiliates selling their other products on clickbank. Maybe you or I will be able to notice that but the average person the the street wanting to learn about Affiliate Marketing or making money online won’t know & will just see dollar signs in their eyes. At what point does this become deception or scamming? Are these Make Money ebooks purely scamming otherwise helpless people into buying a book that holds no real value?

Now I can see Jon’s ulterior movie for doing something like this. It allows him to direct people that might normally buy the book into his forum, but I was under the impression he didn’t want newbies on the forum? So if there’s no information to satisfy the newbies then surely they’ll flock to the forum & annoy him instead :p Ebooks are bad, Wickedfire is good M’kay.

Will definately be interesting to see how this evolves over the coming months. I smell lawsuits.

My question is, have any of you guys ever bought any of these books. What did you make of them?

Are there any books out there that fall outside this scam category & actually offer really good usable information?

Don’t buy any crap ebooks off ebay, get them all here for free instead

Reviewme Launches Affiliate Program

It’s been a while coming but Reviewme have offically launched their affiliate program. Reviewme will now pay you $25 for every new advertiser who purchases a review that goes to completion.

I was kind of hoping they would do something like textlinkads & also pay you for referring publishers to the program but not this time around.

The guys have really been trying to step things up a notch recently, they just had a 50% off sale which finished yesterday now they’re kicking off March with this new incentive to get people on board. I personally signed up with Reviewme for Earners Blog & I’ve recieved a few reviews but nothing that I’ve actually wanted to put up on the Blog just yet.

It’s perfect if you have a product or service that you want to generate a bit of buzz or make a bit of extra cash on blog. Another opportunity to diversify your income streams further.

Adsense up the Game with a New Referral Pricing Structure

For a while I did quite well from Adsense Referrals. I’ve had about 6 convert in the past 6 months however I’ve sent them well over 3000 clicks & 200 signups. So it’s easy to get slightly disheartened to think that only 6 out of the 200 people hit the $100 mark.

Adsense have now introduced a new pricing structure to help address the earning problems with Adsense & Adwords referrals.

AdSense Referrals:

When a publisher who signed up for Google AdSense through your referral earns their first $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5.
When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payment, you will be credited with an additional $250.
If, in any 180-day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).

AdWords Referrals:

When an advertiser you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5.
When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40.
If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus (bonus payments are limited to 1 per year).

You now have the ability to earn an Extra $2600 within a year in Bonuses if you convert 25 Adsense Publishers who earn more than $100 in 180 days & 20 Adwords Advertisers who spend more than $100 within 90 days. Some of the bigger sites should have no problems converting this kind of traffic.

The Small Print:

These rules will also apply to users that you have already referred but who have not yet reached one of the new earning/spend thresholds. For example, if you referred an AdSense publisher who has currently earned $2.00, you will be paid $5.00 if that publisher reaches the $5.00 mark. But, if you have referred an AdSense publisher who has already earned $10.00, you will not be paid $5.00 retroactively for that referral reaching the $5.00 mark. However, should that publisher eventually reach the $100.00 earnings mark within 180 days, you will be paid $250.00.

Conclusion: I’m fairly happy with the changes, if those 194 people that didn’t hit the $100 for meeach made $5 that’s a nice $970 bonus more than with the current system.

All they need to do now is make Smart Pricing on a per site basis & not a per account basis & I’m happy

Quadzilla on Shoemoney’s Net Income Last Night

Seo Black Hat blogger Quadzilla was interviewed on Shoemoney’s Net Income Show last night & I must say it’s one of the more interesting podcasts I’ve listened to in a while. For some reason I always thought Quadzilla was from South America :p You can download the show here it’s roughly about 60 minutes long.

Find out how to make 10c then multiply it by a million
Maximize the flaws in the algos until they’re fixed
Matt Cutts asks Quad to a question to reveal his sites, he politely declines :p
Quadzilla reckons Google could cut out 80% of web spam by removing Adsense but also explains why they wouldn’t do this.
Quadzilla has more than 1000 domain’s but less than 10,000.
Quadzilla has Corporate Clients who are willing to pay for Blackhat knowledge.
The Most efficient Black Hat Technique at the moment is Parasitic hosting to affiliate redirects.
Doesn’t make any money through Adwords, doesn’t feel comfortable with Click Fraud.
Doesn’t post Black Hat techniques on the blog anymore as no-one links to them.
Posts the Black Hat Techniques in the forum instead since people pay money for access.
Has recently paid up to $25,000 for a single domain.
Prefers .com domain names over any other.
Speak briefly about how poker sites are using .net domain names to combat recent laws.
Quadzilla recommends running your own affiliate program & not with a 3rd Party.
Use Clicktracks for metrics.
Quadzilla has been banned from Adsense before. Has also had many warning from Affiliate Programs.
Link Bait is the white hat seo way forward.
Heard that Google tracks domains that have come up in Gmail Emails (Scary?)
Speak about cloaking, what’s ethical & what’s not. I.e. Ranking for Paris Hilton but sending traffic to Poker Sites.
Final tip, if making a White Hat site try & buy a trusted domain first. Google’s latest Algo plays on Trust heavily.

That’s most of the stuff I picked out of the interview, some good points made. Especially about Google tracking which URL’s are appearing in Gmail Email’s….. Tune into the show if you can

Textlinkads to allow links on Blogger

I heard a small rumour that Textlinkads is to allow blogs hosted with Google’s popular Blogger platform to sell text links. Previously blogs hosted on Blogger have been unable to sell text links via Textlinkads.

I have no definite date as to when this will be rolled out, however I assume it should be over the coming months.

Reviewme, A new Revenue Stream for Bloggers

The guys over at textlinkads have launched a brand new service that aims to allow advertisers to pay bloggers to blog about their products & services.

The announced come only days after textlinkads announced they had been acquired by Mediawhiz.

So how does Reviewme work?

The concept is simple, you sign up to their service & submit your blog(s) for review. Reviewme uses a clever algorithm to determine whether or not your site meets the minimum requirements (based on alexa, technorati links & page rank). If your application is successful you will then be able to take on jobs from advertisers.

Advertisers will pay you to write a post on your blog about their service or product, you can choose to accept or deny offers. You are paid depending on how popular your blog is, this can range anywhere between $20 to $200+.

You must disclose that your post is a paid advertisement or a paid review, this is something that other programs like Payperpost don’t. I personally think that this is a good thing & should be welcomed by most bloggers who use the service.

If you are an advertiser you can pay people to post about your product or service, however you cannot require from the blogger that they write a positive review. This is another good feature about the service, taking away any of the bias towards advertisers.
