Looking for a Ruby/Python Developer

Hey guys, I’ve scoped out a new project & I’m looking to partner with a Designer/Developer to take things to the next level. My aim is create a team that is building a constant stream of affiliate sites that provide a useful purpose for people & share the profits.

The kind of person I’m looking to partner with:

Experience in building web applications with a focus on user experience
At least 2 years experience with Ruby/Python
XHTML & CSS is a must
JQuery knowledge
Data mining & Mysql
Experience in designing user interfaces

So if you’re keen to potentially get involved get in touch. Please note, this will not be a full time paid position it’ll involve equity in the business.

How to apply

Rather than taking your word for how good you are I’d like to put forward a quick test, I want you to create a quick skeleton site that performs the following:

Has a search box that allows a user to type in a url (i.e. www.earnersblog.com)
When a user hits submit I want you to create a page around the URL in the format (http://www.yoursite.com/www.earnersblog.com)
On that page I want you to pull a screenshot of my site, the meta description & show the last 5 posts below (not by parsing RSS).
If you can style this & make it look pretty then that’ll earn brownie points also
Once complete drop me a mail at stuart [at] earnersblog.com or leave a comment in this post.
I’ll test the system with another URL to check it works.

If you can do the above in another language other than Ruby/Python give it a shot I’ll not rule out other coding languages.

Coupon Affiliates are stealing from you

Apparently now in the UK 1 out of every 200 visits to an online retail site comes from a Voucher/Coupon Code website. As this type of traffic is increasing year on year, your hard earned affiliate commissions could be getting flushed down the drain when your cookie is overwritten by these rogue practices.

How it Works

Many of the big voucher websites have one incredibly sneaky way of overwriting your hard earned cookie (There are legit ones out there that do things by the book, but I’m not naming names here).

So in order to even view the discount codes you first need to click on the button to reveal them, this opens up a popunder which sets a new cookie, overwriting yours. Now this is where it starts to get very very sneaky.

When you have a large database driven site it’s very easy to start creating pages around every merchant / site known to man that has an affiliate program (regardless of whether they have voucher codes or not), some sites have to do this manually others can do it on the fly. They then start optimising the pages for “Merchant Name Vouchers, Discount Codes & Coupons.”

So here’s now a typical scenario:

You send a customer to the merchant via your affiliate redirect
Customer sees a nice shiny laptop & decide to buy
They get to the checkout & see the merchant has a “coupon code field”
Their eyebrows raise ever so slightly & they type “merchant coupon codes” into Google
Up pops one of the Voucher Code sites with a nice shiny button similar to that above
But….low & behold there’s no coupon codes.
The voucher website has STILL overwritten your cookie though.

This is what pisses me off the most, people are ready to buy, ready to commit. Yet you have you sale stolen from you at the last minute (seemingly without any effort).

Networks are turning a blind eye

One of the UK’s large voucher websites last year reported they sent over $250,000,000 worth of sales through to merchants. With this type of volume the networks are turning a blind eye & letting these sites get away with stealing YOUR commissions.

What is the Role of an Affiliate?

It seems this varies considerably, but here’s a few thoughts (I’d like to know yours also):

What do you think the role of an Affiliate is?

What can be done to combat this problem?

There’s four solutions to this that I can think of:

I look very carefully before promoting some merchants now, if they have a coupon discount field it’s a big RED FLAG for me.
Ban the offending affiliates from Networks
Disable the overwriting of Affiliate Cookies
Credit the Affiliate that sends the consumer to the purchase page before the affiliate that provides the coupon.

Adsense Publishers reporting huge eCPM Drops

Many Adsense Publishers have been reporting huge earning drops in their overall eCPM(Earnings per 1000 Impressions) & EPC (Earnings per Click) since the end of October.

I’ve been hit with around a 50% drop in eCPM. I mostly use Adsense to fund a small chunk of my PPC, so I’m glad I don’t rely too heavily to it, however I know plenty of people that have quit their jobs & live 100% on Adsense earnings (ouch).

There’s been a few theories thrown around that thread as to the cause of the drop in earnings:

The recent Ad changes that reduced the clickable area (I highly doubt this would have decreased the EPC though)
Advertisers reducing budgets (I would have thought people would be spending MORE coming up to Xmas?)
Adsense becoming saturated with too many Publishers? (This doesn’t explain the rather sudden drop in eCPM)
Some have speculated that it’s an Adsense Algo Update (Funny how this always seems to happen around the Stock Holder meetings? )

How many of the Top “Make Money Online Blogs” actually show you how to Make Money?

Whilst looking though Mark’s Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs earlier today I thought briefly about the list & also how appropriate the name was.

Surely a list that’s named as such should be the best place to find blogs about “making money online”….right? I started a small experiment to see how accurate the rankings were. I analysed the last 20 posts on the top 30 blogs & gave them a point if the post was about Making Money Online.

I then reranked the top 30 blogs based on the percentage of those 20 posts that focused on the topic. You can see the rerankings below:

Looking at the list above you can clearly see that 9 out of the top 10 Blogs write 15% or less of their posts about making money online. Which is quite an interesting statistic.

It can also be quite confusing for people who are new to internet marketing.So if the top Making Money Online blogs aren’t writing about making money, then what are they writing about? Here’s a list of the top 10 things Make Money Online bloggers are currently writing about:

Younger blogs have to give away much more useful information to attract new readers, whereas larger & much more established blogs can get away with writing paid reviews & such but still keep the readership due to their authority status.

So before you pay too much attention to the top of Mark’s list, browse a bit further down & check out some of the younger blogs, you might just learn something

Alexadex, No Cheating!

So I’ve been getting into the Australian Stock Market over the past few weeks (ASX) & it’s a fantastic place to earn money if you know what you’re doing & you all know that I’m all for diversifying your income as much as possible.

I don’t totally know what I’m doing just yet but I do like to research things & dig up information that may lead to a more informed choice about something. Not dissimilar from Affiliate Marketing really, learning to pick the right affiliates & right products that will convert & bring good productivity over time.

I found this awesome site a few weeks ago too, it’s called Alexadex & it allows you to play on a pretend stock market using sites Alexa rank as currency. If the rank goes up the stock goes up & you can sell higher for a profit. If the sites rank goes down then your stock will go down & you’ll lose money.

Vision

Do you have a good vision for which websites are going to get popular & which ones aren’t? For example if you’d added Auction Ads to your portfolio last week you probably would have earned a tidy 40,000% profit.

Gaming

Unfortunately, anyone with half a brain would know that all you need to do is look for upcoming sites on digg that have hit the front page & by a heap of stock low then sell once Alexa updates

Oh well, if only the real stock market could be predicted like that. I could be blogging from a Desert Island

So give Alexadex a go, can you get anywhere without using sites like Digg to cheat?

Ok, so I’ve had a number of people submitting their reviews so here’s the first lot. Remember by doing a Blog Review you’ll get a link from Earners Blog to your site. This will help with a number of things:

I’ll also be picking the best review at the end & they’ll get $25 & an SEO Audit of their site. Dave Pasternack Contest Update

I had a bit of a chuckle yesterday when I checked out the SERPS & Dave Pasternack held the number 1 & number 2 position for the keyword. It’s hovering at position 1 now.

I think I’m sitting around position 19 or so, with little or no promotion. A few things I find interesting about this contest:Incredibill has been writing about the topic & interlinking like CRAZY. Get he’s still on page 4.

Dave Pasternack obviously has the advantage in the contest as well, it’s his NAME. It’s easy to go around 1000′s of blogs & leave comments like he did on here especially when you’re signing the blog anchor text with your own name (Dave Pasternack). People argue that Blog comments with Nofollow links are useless. Heh.

Threadwatch, Oilman & Graywolf are the only two really still in the running. I’m moving 2-3 position per day or so but probably not enough to catch up before the deadline. So why not give the guys some link love?

Final question is, will Threadwatch end up paying out $1,000 to Dave Pasternack himself? Boy that’d certainly be a kick in the teeth.

Dave Pasternack SEO Contest

The guys over at Threadwatch are running an interesting little SEO Contest to rank for the name Dave Pasternack.

Why?

It seems Dave Pasternack has caused a lot of friction in the SEO Community by saying that “SEO is a piece of Piss.”

“To be fair, Danny Sullivan said that anything is rocket science if you don’t understand it. Well I don’t know how to bake a cake, but I wouldn’t call such a task “rocket science.” If I really wanted to bake one, I’d buy a cookbook (the Google guidelines) and bake away. Page Rank Updating, Jan 10 2007

I’ve noticed that Google’s Page Rank is currently updating on a number of my sites. You can see for Example that many of my inner pages have gone from Page Rank 0 to 4 however the main page hasn’t updated yet.

I’m assuming that this will happen over the coming week or so….

Just a heads up for everyone to check their inner pages on their sites to look for changes. (Not that Page Rank is overly Important)

Technorati Claiming Problems Update

A while ago I blogged about my frustrations of trying to claim my blog at technorati & after many emails to Technorati I still haven’t had a single reply. Professional.

Anyway I’ve done some digging into the subject as well as some experimentation & I’ve come to the following conclusion for all those people who get the annoying message:

There was a problem claiming your blog. Please try again in a few minutes. You can also go to Technorati Help for help claiming your blog.

It’s quite simple really. The IP Address that your Blog is hosted on has been banned for spamming. This blog is on shared hosting & it just so happens that the IP is banned because someone else has spammed the shit out of technorati. Awesome.

There’s no real way around it other than to move your blog to another IP address.

It’s bullshit but I guess I can live with it now that I know it’s none of my plugins or blog settings that’s stopping it from claiming….

Set yourself goals for 2007

First of all I’d like to wish all of you a very merry christmas & a happy new year. I had a great christmas this year, it’s been my second away from my family & I must say it’s a strange feeling not being with your loved ones at christmas.

That aside I’m sure we all have plenty to look forward to in 2007. So I’m taking this opportunity to talk quickly about setting yourself goals for the new year.

This involves writing down things you’d like to achieve, try or change in your everyday life.

While it’s important to be realistic it also doesn’t hurt to try & be unrealistic too. Sometimes you need a kick in the ass to make the unrealistic possible.

Goals could be anything in your life such as:

Work
Your Websites
Your Family Life
Personal Goals
Lifestyle Goals
Hobbies
Sporting Goals

If you write something down it’s much easier to achieve than if you simply have something in your head. I really don’t know why this is but it’s true, but I’ve set myself goals for Earners Blog & for other websites, I’ve also set myself goals for my day job & then at the end of the year I can see how well I’ve done. I guess I’ll share with you what I’d like to achieve with Earners Blog over the next year:

Rank #1 in Google for Earn Money Online (Current Rank #22)
Reach at least 300 Feed Subscribers
Average 1000 Unique Visitors per day
Remove all Ads & Sign up Direct Advertisers
Get my readers more Involved
Innovate other Webmasters

Number 1 isn’t really to achieve anything other than show it’s possible to rank for anything you want within a short space of time (and perhaps to outsource some of my SEO skillz beyond my day job).
This may not be the most exciting tip I’ve written in the past few months, but trust me. If you just write some things down you may just find them a lot easier to achieve

So here’s to another year. I hope you all have as much success with your websites & blogs as I hope to have.

Digg buries Spike the Vote & its Members

I’m not sure if you remember Spike The Vote? The service that was created to game Digg? Well, the owner decided to sell Spike The Vote on Ebay. You’ll notice he got a tidy sum of $1,275.00 for it. Not Bad.

It’s funny then that the person who bought it, didn’t plan on using the site himself. But rather he turned it over to Digg, along with all 700 members who were signed up & EVERY SINGLE ACCOUNT got banned. Ouch, now that’s a kick in the balls.

Spike the Vote now redirects back to Digg.

So, what can we learn from this? It’s always clever to be very suspicious of sites like these. They could be created by Digg themselves to catch you out. If you are planning in participating in anything like this, please, just create a test account.

I don’t endorse gaming Digg, I think it’s something that you can carefully plan. But if you need 50 other people to lift your story to the front page, it probably wasn’t as well written as you had first thought

Pathetic Quality of Carnival Articles

So I’ve been sifting through the emails of articles submitted for the Internet Earners Carnival. And what can I say, every single last one of them has been a piece of crap. Do people actually know how to write decent articles at all?

Or maybe I’m missing the whole point of this Carnival thing, is it a free for all where you just publish each others shit articles so you can get backlinks?

Well I can tell you now, if I receive off topic, self promotion 50 word articles they’ll get instantly deleted.

In fact I’ll just keep putting the Carnival off until I get enough articles that actually warrant me posting it.

Introducing the Internet Earners Carnival

Ever heard of a Blog Carnival? Well nor had I until last week.

You’re intrigued, I can tell.

A Blog Carnival is an event, like a magazine. It explores a particular topic or niche & is published monthly, weekly or whenever the editors decides really.

A Blog Carnival has huge advantages for the Online Community, it allows you to submit your related articles & have them seen by a wider audience, perhaps attracting more users to your own blog. They are also excellent for one way links.

So without further ado I present to you the Internet Earners Carnival. That’s right, I’m setting up a Bi-Monthly Carnival that will showcase some of the best articles & posts that are submitted. The Carnival will appear on Earners Blog & each month I’ll try to feature at least one Blogger who I think has submitted an “Outstanding Article.”

Just a quick post to welcome my first advertiser from the Performancing Network on the blog.

Google Shares Hit $500

Microsoft Announce Windows Vista is Complete

Microsoft today announced on the Windows Vista Blog that the Windows Vista project is finally completed.

Reports are that Corporate users will get the first deployed versions then the retail version will be released on Jan 30th.

And just what is this so-called RTM? It’s the major milestone where we can confidently say that Microsoft is done with Windows Vista and will be handing it off to our industry partners: PC makers, ISVs and IHVs. They in turn will continue to ramp-up in earnest now that the target is locked — for example, by refining hardware drivers — in order to complete the cycle and make Windows Vista available via retail channels on 30 January 2007. On that date Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system will be available to customers around the world.

I’m sure this will be doing the rounds on Bittorrent very soon :p

Technorati Claiming Woes

About 2 months ago Earners Blog was sitting pretty in Technorati with no problems. Then almost overnight the site vanished (I know wierd :p).

I tried to reclaim the blog but I was greeted with this lovely message:

There was a problem claiming your blog. Please try again in a few minutes. You can also go to Technorati Help for help claiming your blog.

Very Informative.

So I go to the help page & have a good long read to see if I can relate to anything. I figure that maybe it has something to do with my feed, since I recently implemented Feedburner.

I reset all my feeds & try to reclaim again. Nope, nada.

I change the template to something else & try to reclaim. Yep, you guessed it, Technorati are having none of it.
I disable all the plugins on the site & try again. Still nothing.
I’ve submitted a support ticket. No Response.

I’ve almost lost faith in Technorati, I’m not even sure I want to bother going to anymore trouble. Maybe someday I’ll magically reappear. Just wondering if anyone else has had these problems, if so, leave a comment

Do Some Google Research & Get Paid with the User Experience Survey

If you take a keen interest in Google & it’s products you can now get Paid to help do Google Research. If selected you can earn $75 for every hour you spend with a Google Researcher. That could be on the phone, in person or even filling in Online Forms.

You’d be helping us to improve Google products, both existing ones and those that are still in development. For example, we might ask you to try out a prototype and give us feedback on it, or we might interview you to help us plan a new product.

There are a few different types of field work that you can apply for, this will also be dependant on where you live. Most studies seem to be Carried out at the Mountain View Office however they can also be carried out at some of the other offices also.

Usability study at a Google office: Typically, you will use a Google product or prototype, and give feedback on it. You could either meet 1-on-1 with a Google researcher, or work as part of a group. Most studies are done at our HQ in Mountain View, California, but we have offices all over the world, so please feel free to sign up for this type of study even if you don’t live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Remote usability study: A Google researcher will call you while you sit at your computer, and ask you to try out a Google product or prototype via your internet connection, and give feedback on it. You can be anywhere in the world, but need to have a high-speed internet connection.
Field study: Google researchers will come to visit you, and interview you about how you use computers or the Web. We won’t just show up at your door – we will always check with you, and make an appointment. Again, most of our researchers are based at our HQ in Mountain View, California, but we have offices all over the world, so please feel free to sign up for this type of study even if you don’t live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Online survey: you answer questions on the web or in an email, from your own computer.

Firefox 2.0 Download Released

Firefox 2.0 was released yesterday by accident then withdrawn just as quickly. This was maybe due to the SURGE of traffic that Slashdot gave the server.

The main new features are the improved interface & layout and also a complete overhaul of the Options Menu. There’s also a nice inline Spell Checker tool that works in realtime which is & heaps more.

So What’s new in Firefox 2.0:

Visual Refresh: Firefox 2′s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience.

Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled.

Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines that the user may wish to install.

Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.

Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to resume their previous session after a system crash.

Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how to handle Web feeds, either subscribing to them via a Web service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options, but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.

Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms without having to use a separate application.

Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can create a bookmark with a “Live Title”. Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular websites.

Improved Add-ons manager: The new Add-ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes, combining them both in a single tool.

JavaScript 1.7: JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing several new features such as generators, iterators, array comprehensions, let expressions, and destructuring assignments. It also includes all the features of JavaScript 1.6.

Extended search plugin format: The Firefox search engine format now supports search engine plugins written in Sherlock and OpenSearch formats and allows search engines to provide search term suggestions.

Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.

Client-side session and persistent storage: New support for storing structured data on the client side, to enable better handling of online transactions and improved performance when dealing with large amounts of data, such as documents and mailboxes. This is based on the WHATWG specification for client-side session and persistent storage.

SVG text: Support for the svg:textpath specification enables SVG text to follow a curve or shape.

New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
