Digg’s HD-DVD Revolt, the best Linkbait Ever?

So I’m sure most of you already know that Digg’s users all went nuts yesterday posting the infamous HD-DVD Decryption code.
Ignoring the legalities of it all one can’t begin to believe the amount of links the whole escapade has generated for Digg.
Lets have a look for example at Kevin’s blog post here (this was only posted yesterday):

It already has over 335 (Update: The post now has 23,000 links) links showing in Yahoo alone (within 24 hours) from some huge sites such as:
- Techcrunch
- Slashdot
- Boingboing
- Techmeme
- Forbes
- CNet
The list goes on & on.
Whilst the whole escapade may end up costing Digg by losing a valued sponsor & some legal action; at least they can laugh evilly at the sheer number of links they’ve generated. That is unless……they get shut down.

Yes, they did get a ton of links. But, this is Digg after all. Do links even really matter to them anymore? It’s hard to see why they’d need anymore exposure than they already have.
Just curious as to what benefit even more links could bring them.

Well if it ever comes for Digg to “die fighting” I think it would be a good idea to keep the blog going.

When it was happening? I really, really thought hard about submitting one of my own domains up there, because I figured there would be some linkbait or traffic that would come through - especially doing a “story on the story”. But no, I figured relevant links were better in the long run.
But thanks to this blog and BlueHatSEO, I’m thinking of things like this now.

yeah i think a lot of bloggers who posted about it saw a little jump in traffic. it certainly was a crazy day for digg. i can only imagine what was happening behind the scenes
