Hostican = Hotness

15. May 2007 | 47 Comments

A question I get asked quite often is which Web Host I recommend. Normally I’d recommend Dreamhost since you can use the $97 Promo Coupon however I came across a hosting company today that literally blew me away.

They’re called Hostican & they currently offer for $10.95/month:

  1. 500GB Space
  2. UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH (Handy for this post)
  3. Free Domain for life

Now if that’s not a good deal for anyone experimenting with Affiliate Marketing or making money online in general I don’t know what is. Hostican will also buy out your old contract & move all your files.

I’m planning on moving all my dreamhost domains over to these guys asap as I’m eating up a tonne of bandwidth.

Affiliate Program

They also have a rad affiliate program that pays out between $70-$90 per verified sale. And with deals like this currently running you should have no problem pushing these guys.

Yep, that’s a pretty sweet deal. I’m with Dreamhost and don’t plan to move from them. I use ResellerZoom for some of my ‘disposable’ domains, but I would certainly look at getting hosting with these guys in the future .. I reckon it pays to spread your hosting around a bit when you’ve got several domains.

Menguzar 15. May 2007, 9:54 pm

I’d be careful with anyone offering “unlimited bandwidth”. I had adventures with a couple of hosting providers in the past and unlimited bandwidth usually comes with slower-than-average connection speed and generally bad support.

Of course, that might just be my own experience but again, it doesn’t hurt to be careful ie. trying it out with a couple of new domains before moving the old ones :)

bubbles 15. May 2007, 11:37 pm

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. I bet you anything that they limit your CPU usage A LOT. All those types of hosts are good for is picture hosting and static HTML pages. The minute you start accessing a database on a large scale or processing PHP scripts, they cut you off.

I use reseller zoom and am very happy. They give you a large sum of bandwidth/space for a good price, and don’t oversell nearly to the extent dreahost and similar hosts do.

Jon 16. May 2007, 9:54 am

Uprooting and moving hosting accounts is not something that I do to chase a “deal.” For the kind of money that you seem to be making with the excellent tips you provide, I’d be willing to pay more for quality, and not be so concerned about “unmetered” bandwidth.

Stuart 16. May 2007, 10:21 am

I run all my affiliate sites on Dreamhost at the moment & some are using over 2TB of bandwidth a month aswell as the MYSQL being rather slow.

So unmetered bandwidth is a big upsell for me imo.

Bo 16. May 2007, 5:54 pm

You made a right decision. I’ve been with them for some time and can’t recommend them enough. Their customer service is what got me to use them in the first place. You will be more than satisfied with their service.

Aengus Westhead 16. May 2007, 9:28 pm

I have been thinking about moving hosts but I wouldn’t trust ‘unmetered’ bandwidth.

Shawn 17. May 2007, 1:30 am

These deals always sound great, but honestly I wouldn’t ever go with anything touting “unlimited” bandwidth. For a serious blog/website/e-com site, you need a reliable reputable host and you need to beware of stuff like this. Do some Google searches on companies like this; you might be surprised at some of the horror stories you read. My two cents.

Denis Motova 18. May 2007, 8:04 am

There’s always something new on the market. The key is just testing it out and trying. Old doesn’t mean great, old just means old. New means new concept, new ideas…

Dhiren 16. Jun 2007, 5:02 am

I serached a lot for a good hosting, having ready may sites with reviews etc on many hosting companies.Eventually I had shortlisted to a few and contacted each one to get some responses. I must say that HOSTICAN impressed me with their livechat online and I spent quite some time there with the people they had who answered all my questions and doubts and told me that it was an easy process to move the host etc…they even offered to move the files for free etc. I have kep all the conversation logs for anyone that might be interested. In all the conversations they were very clear that I lose nothing in trying as they had a 30 day money back guarantee….If I was not satisfied I could get a refund and not lose anything, specially as I was not going to use their offer for a free domain registration (I already owned the domain).
After convincing myself that it was time to sign up, I indicated the Hostican team my details to move the files from current host to their servers. All went smoothly until the moment came to change DNS settings and wait for the site to go online on the new servers of Hostican. The site would not come online due to some database problems and after much attempts by the livehelp staff they came to the conclusion that I needed a developer….that it was beyond their reach. This was on a week-end…so I changed the DNS settings back to the old host so that the site would be operational the next working day.
Since they wanted me to get a developer, I had no choice but cncel and ask for a refund, although I did tell them that if they could look at the matter with some time, I was willing to let them try to get the site working. But they gave up and refunded me the signup fee MINUS $40.00 which they say was for the file transfer they did for me (which was supposed to be free) and was contrary to all that the livehelp transcripts pointed at.
I was shocked at this attitude and complained, but to no avail.
The only thing I can say is to point this out to any future client to look-out and clarify better (I dont know how – I was very clear in my questions to them still I got ripped off).
It is a shame that the company had this attitude with me.
I hope that they make the info on their site a bit more specific to ensure that it says that file transfer costs 40 USD but they cn offer it to a client if the client stays and does not cancel within the 30 day guarantee period.

Mike Cooper 29. Jun 2007, 2:57 pm

What “Dhiren” wrote sounds like complete crap. He should have read the TOS http://www.hostican.com/company/terms.php

I host 4 website with them, AND they moved over my stuff no problems… sounds like Dhiren is just out to vent… so he should take that and shove it up his @$$.

Bios 03. Jul 2007, 4:45 pm

I’m going to go out on a limb and change to HostICan because of reading this post. I’m currently with DreamHost and although they have a really intuitive AJAX control panel, sometimes, their hosting can be a bit slow, especially with MYSQL.

Randy 22. Jul 2007, 10:43 am

Just want to add my opinion. I just recently signed up with HostICan, so far everything has been great. Auditioned several hosts throughout the years and so far HostICan is the best one yet.

And a little side note: Beware of Dot5Hosting!! They are the worst!

Mike 24. Jul 2007, 2:02 am

Whatever you do STAY AWAY FROM SERVAGE!

They are very slow. The control panel doesn’t give you much options. The site loading time is very slow!!! their staff don’t know much and don’t help you much.

You have a problem? it’s your isp… it’s your browser… it’s your computer… it’s your cable connection… it’s you! it’s not SERVAGE!!!??

That’s all you hear from them. Fix the god damn thing.

I am sorry for people who are hosting their sites with SERVAGE.

They used to be good. But they want to be rich fast. They shouldn’t be in this business.

STAY AWAY FROM SERVAGE HOSTING.

Tony 04. Aug 2007, 9:06 am

Got $30 off a 12 year plan with the hostican coupon: castiron

Enjoy :)

Akiva 15. Nov 2007, 9:59 pm

Stuart,

do you have any updates on Hostican? Are you still pleased with their service? Do you know how they compare to hostgator?

Mike Cooper 25. Jan 2008, 4:54 am

HostICan is doing very well, for my hosting. No problems, great company.

RLvB 30. Jan 2008, 8:46 pm

HostICan was fine for the first two weeks; after that, I started getting plagued by errors saying I was overusing the server’s resources. The support staff told me to access my CPU logs, but these confirmed that I had not in fact broken the limits stated in their policy. When I pointed this out, they started ignoring me.

Fortunately I was still within my 30-day refund term. After trying to resolve this issue for 2 more frustrating weeks and failing, I got my refund and left. I am now at a different host where I am experiencing no resource problems whatsoever.

My experience with HostICan has been very unsatisfactory.

Stuart 30. Jan 2008, 11:08 pm

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, but it seems to be fixed now. What sort of pressure where you putting on their CPU?

RLvB 30. Jan 2008, 11:33 pm

I was running phpBB, getting about 10 posts per hour.

They told me that their shared hosting plans are supposed to be able to handle 75-100 people online on vBulletin, and even more on phpBB. But my forum was taken down with only 5-15 people online.

Initially the CPU logs showed load at about 4% when the forum got taken down. After I took some measures such as disabling attachments, gzip compression and search indexing, I got it down to around 2% during busy periods, 0-1% otherwise. The last time it got taken down, it was at 1.8%. Note that their stated maximum is 25% sustained for 60 seconds.

When I informed the support department of this, they didn’t even get back to me.

Q 09. Feb 2008, 8:32 am

I had been with them for about 6 months and starting in January they changed the way they monitor things and all hell broke loose. I woke up to check my site and saw a big error message stating that my account was suspended. From there it just got worse and they ended up canceling my site and providine me with a link to download my files that doesn’t even work. I am still trying to liberate my files from them and they are very uncooperative to say the least.

I haven’t been able to reach anyone on the phone since Tuesday. They never return your calls and when they rarely do respond to an e-mail it’s very unprofessional and offers no support or assistance. Stay away from them!! Read all about it here.
http://forum.hostican.com/shared-hosting/738-account-suspended-abuse.html

I’m not the only one having issues. Please read through their forum before they delete all the bad press.

Stuart 09. Feb 2008, 10:38 am

Interesting Issues Q, All I can tell you know is that I host about 50 sites with Hostican. Two in Particular get over 10,000 uniques a day, use word press (with WP Super Cache) & I’m not hitting the CPU limits.

They’ve already done that once before.
Last month, the Shared Hosting forum was literally full of complaints about this. They were all merged into a single thread, which was then locked and finally deleted. Fortunately I expected this, and saved a copy before the deletion:

http://gayteenforum.org/stuff/HostICan-deleted-threads/

380 posts.

The problem seems to depend on the individual HostICan server the site is on. Most of the people I’ve spoken to who experienced this problem were on ESC06 or ESC10. (I have reported this to HostICan several times, but it was always ignored.)

Denis Motova 15. Feb 2008, 3:58 pm

HostICan Rocks! Thats I gotta say!

Greg 15. Feb 2008, 4:03 pm

Hey guys,
I have had HostICan service for a while now and I can say with 100% honesty that they have been great. I would never choose another host because HostIcan suits all of my needs. Support has been always quick to respond and very helpful at getting my needs met. If this was an ebay sell i would say “A+++ would do business again.” haha. All in all, great host, fast, good uptime.

@Denis Motova:
>Hostican Rocks! Thats I gotta say!

Thanks for this unbiased, impartial review. Oh, I forgot. You work for them.

Jennifer 16. Feb 2008, 11:01 am

Do your homework before hosting with hostican!
http://www.scriptygoddess.com/archives/2008/02/12/buyer-beware-do-not-host-with-hostican/

Whatever they tell you – if it’s not working out – they will blame YOU and say you’re abusing their service. Then they will not give you your money back. DO NOT TRUST HOSTICAN

1) They need to fix their servers
2) They need to honor their refund policies!!!

FWIW – Their accreditation was revoked by BBB:

Indeed. Yet they still claim: “Our excellent standing in the BBB can’t be matched.”
Another lie.

This is nothing but the same old stuff, over and over again, RLvB and Jennifer say the same thing in a million places… like you got no life and nothing else to do. You both are very sad. Grow up.

RLvB 23. Feb 2008, 9:13 pm

@ Kevin Jones:
> This is nothing but the same old stuff, over and over again, RLvB and

More like 10. (And it’s not like we’re the only ones. I’ve seen about 40 people at it in various parts of the web.)

> like you got no life and nothing else to do. You both are very sad. Grow up.

I have a life; we just have different priorities. One of mine is to spread the word about companies that scam their customers.

I started using HostICan in December 2007. If anything like this had come up during my research of this host, I would never have given them my money. I would never have entrusted them with hosting my site, I would never have had any of these problems and I wouldn’t have lost 20-30 hours of productivity (and uptime) trying to solve them.

If I can prevent even a single person from hosting with them, it’s been worth it.

Stuart 23. Feb 2008, 10:16 pm

Guys, please take this to personal emails, thanks.

Patrick 01. Mar 2008, 5:28 am

I unfortunately had a similarly bad experience with Hostican. You can read about it here:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=667484

In just under a month it has become the 4th-most-replied thread in the shared hosting subforum at Web Hosting Talk (out of 53,000 total threads), which I highly doubt would have happened if only one or two people were having problems with hostican.

Many people have shared their negative experiences there, and there is something very wrong with hostican.

Mitch 06. Mar 2008, 4:40 pm

I know this comment thread is turning into what seems like an attack on HostIcan, but I too have been burned by this company. I’ve recently abandoned their sinking ship and am trying to spread the word to avoid them.

Since moving to a new host I have not encountered any dreaded CPU limit…which leads me to believe that their CPU limit is either broken or is an excuse to upsell their customers a VPS.

Which should also be avoided like the plague. Here’s a scary thread about their VPS.

Please, be diligent about who you host with.

RLvB 13. Apr 2008, 10:42 pm

Lol, another cover-up. They deleted the thread.

Here’s a copy: http://gayteenforum.org/stuff/HostICan-deleted-threads/

webby 08. May 2008, 7:30 pm

I recently just moved to hostican because the other cheap site i was with (3ix) was down for over 24 hours and even erased my SQL database along with a bunch of other stuff! Luckily i had just backed it up a few days previous. I switched to hostican because they said they would transfer my site over. I signed up and signed up for the transfer and I an email from one of them saying since my site only has files (it’s a blog) that I should transfer it myself. I am no computer pro. But they didn’t stick with what they said they would do. So I’m not feeling very good about it. I used to be with liquid web for another site I had. They did it all for me. They were fantastic. I guess I should just pay the money and feel safe.

Patrick Bozeman 10. May 2008, 1:18 am

I recently moved to HostICan and I can safely say that I have not had any issues with them, I run a WP blog. I mean if your unable to move a simple blog, It means you should start reading online cause its not hard. The fact that you say its “hard” means that you need to learn as your site grows – you will have to install web apps (imagine that)…. But seriously… just do it and stop complaining… easy stuff once you know.

RLvB 10. May 2008, 10:43 pm

I think Webby’s problem was that they didn’t do what they said they would.

Skylar 15. May 2008, 11:39 pm

Don’t use HostICan, they used to be formally know IndexCore.com and they ripped people off such as me. I resold there servers for them and was suppose to make $80 for each one. They paid me for the first one, then after that I sold 3 more and they ran. They also blew off a lot of customers I knew personally that I recommended to them and it cause kaos and they didnt care. They then closed the doors and walked out on everyone. Then a few days later when i went to the site it came up as HostICan with all the same info such as who they are, how the got started, there location and all. Everyone needs to stay away from them

Brian Lim 29. May 2008, 9:35 am

Yea, Yea… don’t use them… sounds like a pathetic attempt to defame HostICan… $80? per dedicated? hahaha – I refer 10 dedicated as an affiliate per month and all of mine get paid… and I don’t get $80 but $200… sounds like your talking crap.

hosticonisascam 08. Aug 2008, 5:08 pm

I was with hostican for a couple years and as of the alst few months they are totally screwing people. I have a forum I have been running for 2 years with them and it has 5 active users and I get shut down a couple times a week.. FIVE USERS!!! Then are just grabbing as many hosting accounts as they can stuff on a server and screwing everyone. Leave them well enough alone unless you enjoy suffering.

joe gelb 03. Sep 2008, 2:00 am

unlimited bandwidth is actually an industry term for band width that performs well at regular levels then slows with increasing band width need so you are actually bettar off with a host that offers a definite band width number that is large then with a host that uses the unlimited band width semantics. i dont really know what im talking about but i did read that in wiki pedia. this article is biased i feel yes the deal is good but for a big traffic site would require a big traffic host like media temple because when there is a band width need spike a server for unlimited band width will probably freeze the site in the server or be the perpetual loader like some big under financed .com companies cough cough

Arron 20. Feb 2009, 4:37 am

I agree with so many of these people. All I can say is never again!

Edward 01. May 2009, 2:28 pm

ATTENTION: I have a “Tera Host” plan with Hostican. They say “unmettered bandwith” an “1 Tb” of files, but they have a “file count” limit, 200.000 files. This limit is not in the Terms. I develop a site to a small journal, and this domain have 4 Gb. With 4 Gb, I have the site blocked for uploads.

Rob 30. Jul 2009, 7:35 pm

HORRIBLE COMPANY!! DO NOT GO TO THEM!!!

They took my site down the second it inconvenienced them, I tried to work with them but they made it impossible, I ended up cancelling my service with them and moved to a new host, I was assured I would be refunded my initial up front payment minus what I had used, the second i put in the cancellation form they deleted my site, deleted my log in details and NEVER contacted me back.

I had to chase them up through the BBB after 6 weeks of trying to call them with no answer and email them with no replies and only then did they respond, their response was a load of shit that basically said they’re keeping my money.

Bad company, Bad service and compete lies on what they advertise.

Oh and half their “good” reviews are done by some guy named gene who WORKS FOR THEM.

Manny 11. Nov 2009, 3:54 am

I Just joined with them and if their customer service, which advertises as 24/7 is any indication—I am outta there. They do not pick up the phone and the “instant” chat goes immediately to email. In some other world, we would call that false advertising.

John Doe 01. Dec 2009, 4:49 am

I accidentally came across these comments and frankly they seem to me fake. All posts prior to that infamous this hosting company. I can say that you’ve never been customers of hostican and only slanders the company. I am their customer for over a year and I am happy with it. Until now I have 100 % uptime. My site “automate-bf.com” which is hosted in hostican works perfectly. I intend very soon to update my shared account with VPS.
