A client’s site causing complaints - what to do?

A client has posted a story on their, which has caused a handful of people to contact us asking to close the site down. The story is getting lots of argumentative comments.
I never been asked by an outside party to close and site down, and I have no idea of proper procedures or what to do in the this situation.
Apparently the news story is defamatory and threatening material, and heavily insults one person in particular.
I don’t want to wade in and demand them to remove the story if it’s perfectly legal, but also, I don’t want to do nothing if it’s causing complaints and if we, the host, may get in trouble as ultimately the host is responsible for clients content.
I also don’t want to wade into someone else’s argument either.
Anyone else had similar experience that could offer advice?
One of the other problems is that it’s an Islamic site and I am just not knowledgeable about the content being discussed.
