Hi there.

I’m currently working on mark II of a video hosting site I have, and as such will quickly outgrow my current infrastructure. I am therefore looking for new server infrastructure to host the site.

The current site has been live for 11 days and is a hastily cobbled together mishmash of PHP and a second Windows Media server all running Silverlight. It has used about 3GB of disk space, 10GB of bandwidth, and about 200,000 hits.

Mark II will allow users to upload their own videos, similar to YouTube and every other video sharing site in the world, as well as us uploading our own. So I would expect bandwidth to be higher.

I’m looking for a Linux server, and require the following:
- PHP 4.3 and above (including support of CLI)
- MySQL database server
- LAME MP3 Encoder
- Libogg + Libvorbis
- Mencoder and also Mplayer
- FFMpeg-PHP
- GD Library 2 or higher
- CGI-BIN
- Be able to run background processes

I’ve been looking into various grid and cloud solutions, as well as VPS and dedicated options, however I’m not sure what would be the best solution for a project like this. If I get a lot of users uploading and encoding video I might outgrow a VPS, hence looking at EC2/S3 solutions as well.

Does anyone have any experience in this kind of infrastructure that they can share??
