Hello, to start with I am not satisfied with DirectSpace.net support at all the only good thing are the prices and features.

Everything started out great once i ordered my dedicated server, then suddenly after about 20+ days my server was offline, I contacted DirectSpace and they said that my server was taken down because of me using IP’s that wasn’t assigned to my server. I remember that I never did such thing, and that was what I told them but they said I caused it, so I looked at an older ticket and one of the staff members said he assigned me two of the IP’s that I was suspended because of using. Now when they brought my server online again I’ve received about 800 emails from cPanel saying that ALL services are failing all the time and this is also caused by DirectSpace. I’m contacting them all the time but they answer with are ”We are looking in to this” and ”We will take care of it” but nothing happends and i usually have to wait about 5-18 hours for such useless replies.

Well, this is my bad experience with DirectSpace. If there is anything else you want to know about this just ask!

Good afternoon, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. Also, apologies for my first post being a request. I just found this forum through Google and, quite frankly, you seem to be much more informative than Google will ever be in this case.

Anyway…

Basically, I’m looking for a web host to host my small company web site on. I also want to host two separate blogs on it, as well as a forum.

Thing is, from my experience during the years with hosting, there’s always one problem or another. I really want good performance, since I (naturally) dislike slow load times. I tried MediaTemple late last year, and discovered since they are based in the US, the performance is really crippled. I’m in London, UK, so I suppose it’d be safer to go for a west Europe based host.

And I would like to avoid cPanel. If you can give me a good reason why to use it, feel free. But from my experience, cPanel limits control and is just generally slow.

Last thing I’d appreciate would be if all domains hosted on the account had their own home directories, so to speak. In my experience, cPanel hosts just put all domains under a common ‘public_html’ directory. I want separate ‘public_html’ directories for all domains.

Storage space isn’t very important, as long as it’s a couple of gigabytes ore more. Bandwidth… really no idea. Obviously not anything oversold, though.

Budget would be around £/€10, preferably less. Can go a little bit higher in case of something exceptional (especially if it has re-selling capabilities, I could go higher).

I’ve been looking at something called HostQuay, but I’ve never heard of them before. I’ve also used Loopia in the past, but as they charge for additional (more than 1) SQL databases I can’t deal with it any more at this moment.

I’m sorry for the long post, and I thank you very much in advance. Any aid or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Amazon prices and resources have many, big and small, running to get on board. Recently I read Smugmug found, within a 24hr period, how to use their services saving an estimated 500k.

Hosting a social network where members get to upload media and set security options for each individually, has kept me without finding a way to use them….. Amazon Flash Streaming service "CloudFront" would be ideal if combined with Amazon S3. The problem it’s that these services do not support streaming private media files with a signed URL…Yet how did Smugmug did it? The way I see it Amazon decided to let outside companies, programmers to find their own solutions and plug ins to diversify the usage of their services. I see many plugins and none could provide a clear answer to my queries.

Has anyone used managed to use their services in this manner? For their price and the fact that all data upload will be free until June 30th 2010 has made me seek a solution. Thanks…

Been lurking around at webhostingtalk for quite sometimes already but didn’t register an account until recently.

Here is my first review for a Singapore Web Host, Vodien, probably will be useful for those looking for offshore hosting, especially in Asia.

Originally, I started my site with Sharkspace, however due to some problems, we decided to move to another host.

Since our target audience are mostly Singaporeans, we decided to find a Singapore Web Host instead.

I registered an account with them on 01 October 2009 around midnight 12 plus (Singapore Time GMT+8). Payment was made around 12 am and around 3 am, I received my account information which I think it was quite acceptable for that timing since they do not have automatic setup.

After having received our account information, I immediately start to transfer my site over to them. Having met with some problems, I submitted a support ticket and it was replied within minutes, considering it was 4am in Singapore Time GMT+8, it definitely a plus!

Everything were blazing fast after I moved my forum to their server. Then, I noticed that account activation email sent to hotmail were bounced back. I immediately, submitted my second ticket to notify them about this problem and they contacted hotmail regarding this and within few days, this was solved.

Been with them for six months and counting

Will recommend Vodien for those looking for Singapore Web Host with excellent support and blazing fast server!

As many of you know, due to its coming of age before firewalls, NAT etc. FTP can be a problematic protocol. Its insecure, temperamental, open ports left and right and is a downright pain to work with.

It is, however, a fact of life in certain industries.

Our firm has a need for a super reliable FTP host. FTP is all we want/need. It needs to run as perfectly as FTP can possibly run, it needs to be setup to support a whole raft of different client options. We don’t need high transfer volumes, we need reliability and proper configuration above all else.

We are not overly sensitive to cost.

We have our own (colocated) server infrastructure (2x datacenters), but we don’t feel we have the expertise to configure FTP properly through our firewalls etc.

Suggestions?

Lots of reading for me this weekend, but I am glad I do it because not only its a great way to read some great posts made by our active members, it is also a great way to notice some of the members that might have slipped by me during the month.

The 2010 opening month, I have to tell you, was interesting to say the least. I was excited to see crazypenguin finish in the top 10. He has had some great runs before as well and solid knowledgeable contributions.

But this month is special in more than one way. I decided to break all the rules (or modify them as I go) because I could not just single out one particular member deserving of the award. I was actually impressed with 3 members. Steve-Hostirian had a strong start to the year, finishing the month #1 and sharing some great insight knowledge on the way, which makes Steve our first winner!

Just a heads up. I was just trying to think up of names and came across pandihost.com. As you can see, it has the exact same template as netearthone.com and everything in between. Of course only things change is the very ugly attempt of a banner and changed links. They also changed the copyright at the bottom.

If you look at the Contact Us, they belong to A-T TECHNOSERVE LTD which I can’t find any info on google. I haven’t contacted NetEarthOne yet as I was waiting for their live support, but offline now. If you have a domain with them, please report it. Will contact them tomorrow if it hasn’t been yet.

I have recently set up a VPS for a company from 1&1. Once I had received the server, I logged into RDP and was presented with a message superimposed onto the desktop containing the system info, plus a message which read:

"ATTENTION: Please do not install any system updates (Windows Hotfixes/Drivers) on your server. The installation might result in a complete system crash. All system updates are carried out by our own service team. There is no need for any activities on your part."

I emailed 1&1 about this and, after several emails asking for more technical details, they replied:

Virtuozzo shares the operating system files between each container on the hardware node. It takes time to test and implement any and all system updates on our VPS platforms due to varying server configurations. This is why you can update software installed on your VPS, but not the OS. Other providers may use different virtualization software, and thus not encounter these configuration hurdles.

From my experience, servers should be kept as up to date as possible. I had a look on the Windows Update site, and it seemed that there were 24 outstanding critical updates. Not sure what 1&1 are playing at here, since in their guide they state that it is our responsibility to keep the server as secure as possible.

I am not entirely convinced that their email statement is 100% correct, I think they are just making excuses.

Can anyone verify this? The server runs Windows Server 2003, and is powered by a very old (5 years) version of SWSoft (now Parallels) Virtuozzo containers with the web power panel.

Post Reply? Has anyone else seen their load and memory graphs drop right down over the last couple of days? I have a couple of WordPress sites hosted on a PS, which used to jolly along at about 100MB usage, but they’ve been down to about 25-30MB for the last three days. The sites seem to be working fine, so I’m wondering what’s up. I wonder if it is ’sensor error’? Obviously it’s great news if it is correct, especially coming just as the capacity doubling was announced (but I see all references to ‘burstable’ have disappeared off the page, so perhaps that’s not quite the news it was presented as…)

Oh yes! I am setting a new record for announcing the winners of our small little contest - more than 2 months later! Distracted with the purchase of a new webmaster community that needs a lot of work of its own, I kept pushing the responsibility to screen through our top posters that closed the year of 2009. But, I set this weekend aside to catch up on any outstanding work I have so I am hopeful that by the end of it we will not only have the winner for the month of December 2009, but also January and February 2010! Post Reply? I set up google apps with another hosting service. Now that I moved to dreamhost google apps for my domain isn’t working. The check box to enable Apps for the domain is checked but there are no MX records under the domain for Apps. Should i just add them myself? If so how do i find them?

Post Reply? I am new to Dreamhost/WP. When looking at the directories for my website in FTP I do not see Wordpress or the directories where the pages, etc. are stored. My login should have access to everything and the site works fine. Any suggestions where I can find those files?

Hi, i’ve been wanting to set up a podcast hosting service for a while , up until now i’ve just been building sites using wordpress as a platform for publishing podcasts.

but recently i came across mediacore which is exactly what i need, but it seems really difficult to install and my current host doesn’t have python.

is anyone running this software or aware of a web host that supports it?

Is there a way to block rapid leech scripts effectively.. My company has tried pretty much everything… blocking ports, turning fopen_urls off and changing the PGP cache limit. We have also tried banning many of the servers IPS for rapid share / mega uploader, but they keep coming back.

I was wondering if any knew of a daemon that would scan for specfic keywords on a webserver and could send them back for a review to the webhost..

It would be nice if we could change the banner on different pages of the site in Site Builder.

I have uploaded my banner image OK but the same image shows on every page. I would like to be able to have image #1 on the home page and image #2 on other pages and even image #3 on other pages.

For example www.mustsellrightnow.com
On the home page I would like the banner to be without the car. I have the image. On the Real Estate tab I would like a home in the image where the car is. Again, I have the image. While on the Aviation tab I would like to have an airplane where the car is. The banner that is loaded is obviously for the Auto tab.

If this is available I cannot find out how to change it.

I signed up with Corenetworks 3 years ago for there baby dedicated server that come with 1.7 ghz / 80 gb hard drive. I installed centos on it and used server cp

During the 3 years I used the server the only time it crashed was when I messed it up. I ended up using it for a few domains and mainly storage for downloads from my other domains. Initially I got the server to teach my self how to manage a unmanaged server but after a while lost interest and decided to go for a fully managed VPS

I have not rebooted the server for I think 2 years now and only because of my mistakes not network or hardware related.

You get a real good deal with them as they own the data center and all equipment and even although the server is unmanaged the guys there is very helpfull.

You also have free remote power and IP KVM access which is a bonus

I only paid $25 and the price is $29 now but the server is a higher spec.

The only reason I decided to stop using the server is because I don’t really need it anymore as I prefer fully managed now.

As the server has been running for 3 years non stop I tried to get them to give me the server (hint) so I can play with it here at home but they didn’t budge :D. It must be full of dust by now as it was not touched all the time

If you looking for a unmanaged server with a datacenter that is reliable and at a good price I recommend corenetworks.net

I watch my share of online videos much like everyone else. This morning I watched Jimmy Stewart recite a poem about his beloved dog, Beau, and it brought me to tears. This wasn’t the first time I’d seen it, but this morning it had special meaning to me because my baby, a three year old Golden Doodle named Payge, died in my arms yesterday morning.

There are lots of events that change people’s lives, and losing a pet is one of those tragic moments. Although my loss right now seems unbearable, I’ve been told the pain will ease with time and I’ll remember her for all the love we shared. My wife and I spoiled Payge, but she was part of our family, and that’s just the way we are.

My wife and I are small business owners, and Payge would go with me every evening to close the shop. On the way there, I’d always roll her window down and she’d put her nose next to the rearview mirror and let the wind rush through her fur. Or I’d open the moon roof and she’d stick that big nose out the top. I will so miss that.

This was a very personal loss for my wife and I, but everyday families lose their homes to foreclosure, or lose their jobs, or business owners are forced to close their doors. Some tragedies are unavoidable, like Payge’s, but some are preventable. At Hostirian, I always preach disaster recovery. Lose your data and likely lose your company. Some businesses simply never recover. Fortunately, we offer solutions to prevent those types of tragedies.

For my wife and I, our healing and recovery process meant locating another puppy to love, which we have done. Her name will be Abbie. At present I am using VPS hosting with less then 256 MB RAM. I have no problem with my hosting provider but not impressed with website load speed.

I am running 6 WordPress blog using WP Super Cache Plugin. I am looking for reliable and good performance hosting with cost less then $20 per month.

At present my blog get about 1000 visitors per day and expecting increasing day by day.

I am interested in Media Temple’s Grid Service there Grid hosting looks promising. As they say they can handle bursts of traffic from Digg, reddit etc.

There are many mix review about Media Temple this do not give clear picture about there grid hosting.

I want to know about there Grid hosting performance. Is there anyone who is using there Grid Hosting, if yes then how there service is. Can they handle lot of traffic.

I got a site hosted there and after 4 days they went down and they LOST all of my data. They are ignoring my mails now, on the site they are saying they had a hard disk failure. If that’s true it’s there datacenter’s fault which is InterServer but I highly doubt that as I saw their databases and root screenshots when I was googling their name. In short I got screwed by them.

I’m ready to provide my domain to the administration to I can prove this story is true.

Avoid pennylesshosting.com at all costs.

one of they node is offline… For more than 10 hours and still offline.

They dont reply tickets, veportal is offline, vps doesnt works

Hello, I currently have a Basic Dedicated Server and I am very happy with it. I can also add that I have been a HostGator customer for about 5 years and in general I am very satisfied.

Our business has grown and we now require a 2nd more powerful dedicated server. I would love to get this at HostGator except it seems that all of the HostGator servers are located in the same physical location. The chances of a disaster may be remote, but it seems logical to me that for redundancy it would make sense to have our 2nd dedicated server in a different location than our 1st one.

Can anyone offer advice on this? Suggest a competitor or offer some kind of HostGator solution?

I think it would also be a very useful service if hostgator somehow offered a remote backup location where I could store the archive files from a complete backup of my dedicated server.

Basically i would like to have managed backups occurring on my dedicated server. Is this something hostgator offers?

5 years ago i was tasked to get a new website up and running for a new gaming clan me and two others wanted to create. Going in blind i went about the needs and in a short space of time we had our site, domain name, and hosting all sorted. Only now have i realised the mistake i made. I went to one company for all 3 and whilst i have had 100% uptime and no problems for 5 years, i am now seeing the problems of making such a basic mistake in web hosting.

The problems started back in October 09 when we stopped receiving our hosting bill. Not a problem, they would send reminders if i forget, they didn’t and still haven’t. Despite contacting them i am not paying for our hosting yet still receive it.

Ok so thats not exactly a problem, some might even think its a lucky deal, but the problems are mounting up.

Roll on to February this year and all of a sudden my forums email system starts to fail on sending to some email accounts. I look in to it and see they are being blocked for the shared IP we’re on being blacklisted. Now 90% of emails being sent for thread reminders etc are failing to go through. Again i let my hosts know but receive no response. Its like they have vanished.

So after researching I have little options to play with, i decide to change hosts. Again researching, i choose Hostgator as their price is pretty competitive for their top pack. Going through the transfer i come up to the DNS name server changing section and quickly find out i am not the register name for our domain. Roll back to 2005 and i vividly remember my hosting company saying they would remove my details from the domain so i wouldn’t get bombarded with spam. Of course i happily accept this kind gesture only to now realise what i had agreed to.

Trying to contact the guy who registered my domain has again proved futile. As an employee of the hosting company i wasn’t surprised of this.

So end of Feb and i’ve not got very far. Thinking worst case scenario, i go and check other domain names for us with different endings and find the .co.uk version is available so buy it up. My train of thought is copy my entire site to my new host and have the .co.uk domain associate with it. I go about starting this process to find when i go to my hosts ip they give to check your site is working, gives me a licencing error - Link was posted to the redirect i get but just seen i cannot post links. Here’s what it says:

Your License is Invalid

Scenarios for Invalid License:
1) Possible Typo of license number provided
2) Trying to use the script without a valid license

Does this mean i cannot take my site to another host though?

So to summerise my queries:

Sticking with old host:
1. Can i change the mail server my vbulletin forum uses to negate the blocked IP occurrence?

2. Can i get my .com domain register to hand over my domain in to my name at renewal date later this year or will he likely just keep his name on it?

3. Is getting my site on to the .co.uk domain with hostgator the best way forward assuming i can do so regarding the invalid license?

Thanks for looking and sorry for the long post. I will be looking through the forums for other threads similar to mine to see how they got on.

Is it possible to buy only a database hosting service? After all I don’t need any domain to host and from what I’ve seen, MySql database is created per domain name.

Hi all,

I’ve recently been suspended from my shared host (UK2.net) for high CPU usage. The hosts won’t tell me what is causing this high CPU usage (despite asking numerous times if they can investigate this - even their CEO via twitter and email said they can’t tell me what has caused it!) So I’m looking for a new host.

I run a car owners club website and forum - we are using 5Gb of disc space and had the following stats for 2009:
Unique visitors - 76,072
Number of visits - 182,665
Pages - 5,431,977
Hits - 27,536,797
Bandwidth - 275.80 GB

So we’re hardly huge! The site runs a php/SQL forum with around 200 active daily members, a small online club shop, and a basic html/flash main website sitting at the front of it all.

UK2 are saying that we need to upgrade to VPS or Dedicated hosting, but I have absolutely no knowledge or experience of setting something like this up. I took 1 node off their VPS service for a trial but got completely lost with it all and wasn’t able to get anything up and running.

We obviously don’t have a huge budget, but probably do need to upgrade to something more than shared hosting to accommodate future growth of the site. We could probably stretch to £30 / $45 a month but would need all the set up done for us as well as any ongoing maintenance.

What do you guys think/suggest would be best for us. UK based would be an advantage, but not necessary. Support needs to be good and fast as UK2 were absolutely disgraceful in this area and caused no end of frustration!

One of my clients wishes to have several different protected areas for users to access.

Now, I can easily use the cPanel to set up a couple of username/passwords for a common login credential set for each area, however, I believe they may be interested in having individual user logins for access, which could eventually become unwieldly to manage by hand.

I’ve been trying, without much success, to find a free or inexpensive script and/or program to handle this level of user management to restricted areas, however, most packages are complex, integrating membership subscriptions, etc.

I was hoping someone might be able to recommend something simple to use, but powerful enough to allow for (preferably) web-based management of user accounts and access credentials.

For the second or third time I have again encountered the frustration and embarrassment of having one of my domains parked, and my site unavailable, even though the Domain reg bill was paid well in advance..

Your billing system has hiccups, and some how had failed to register my payment yet again.

Surely a 2nd ‘final’ domain expiry warning could be implemented say one or two days before you park?

Had this been the case I could have made billing aware of the system failure, and also precluded the embarassing situation where I have to explain to 60 or 70 of my active users that the hosting company has cocked up again.

Hostgator is a great company, and I have made professional recommendations to E-Businesses that have taken up Hostgator packages.

For them this event would represent a real cost, I’m lucky in that the site that went down is a hobbyist site and as such is not revenue generating.

Your chat technician suggesting I hop onto chat to advise I have made payment, whilst a sound idea of itself, is I would venture a little impractical and requires a pessimistic (and dare I say knowledgable) view of Hostgators billing system.

I’ve been with Umbrahosting for almost 2 years with a shared plan.
The plan I have doesn’t exist anymore, I signed up when they started I guess in fact the plans were very extremely oversold (for my point of view) and cheaper than now.
The experience has been very good.
The first months I experienced some downtime with my server only (lucky ) but once it was a data-center problem and then a user using all the resources. At the end they decided to move to Giganet and from that time till today everything was perfect. The servers are fast too.

The think that really got me was the support which has been very nice from the beginning. They always helped me and solved every problem quickly. I’m a very satisfied customer.
I recommend them a lot, especially if you wanna start your little project and pay a few dollars

I signed up for MediaLayer a little over a year ago after advice I received from a post I made on Web Hosting Talk entitled "No Games, Just Web Hosts."

As I stated in that post, I was looking for a host that catered to websites that had modest needs. My ideal host was one with a sensible hosting plan, fast and reliable server, and quality support. MediaLayer met my expectations in all three departments. While not perfect, MediaLayer was toted as one of the best hosts for premium shared hosting plans. For people like me, who want the best but do not want to pay for more than they need, MediaLayer is one of the better matches.

When I signed up for MediaLayer I kept a log of my thoughts and noted any difficulties moving into MediaLayer. It took less than an hour to my process my request on a Saturday afternoon. After giving them my information for my previous host, they were able to move 2 of my websites from A Small Orange to their servers after 2 hours and 30 minutes. They explained that it took longer to do so because there was no more space on my previous host and they had to FTP sync the files instead of their usual protocol of creating an archive on the server and downloading it.

My WordPress blog has about 175 MB of data and receives about 5 GB of traffic a month. Majority of this traffic comes from the graphic designs that I use for PHP generated forum signatures. My blog never really took off so after the first 2 or 3 months of using MediaLayer, I stopped updating and monitoring it. However, because I am usually active in forums I could tell whether or not the site went down so the service was still vital. As far as I could tell, MediaLayer never went down. Sometimes the images were stuck for a minute but I was unsure whether or not that was my ISP or MediaLayer so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Whenever I did PHP scripting though, it was fast but I am not entirely sure how accurate my judgment of speed is since I did not use any scientific means of assessment. It is entirely possible that it just "feels fast."

As for support, I had several problems with WordPress and billing issues that were resolved within an hour two of submitting tickets at pretty much all hours of the day. Issues ranged from WordPress problems to cron jobs to billing issues. They were not able to help me all the time, as one of the errors I pointed out was not reproducible at their end but I don’t really blame them for that since you cannot fix a problem you could not see in the first place. As for billing, I was overcharged once on this account. I was on automatic payment every month and I received an email that said "Action Required" and said I had to manually pay this month or my website would be canceled. Naturally, I paid the money via PayPal without questioning it since the due date was soon(which in retrospect I should have). The next month I notice that I was being billed twice so I sent a ticket. They immediately credited me back my money and fixed it so I was only being billed once every month after.

Afterwards, they asked me for a copy of the email that requested that I paid. Of course, I complied with the request but I thought it was odd that they told me, very simply, that the email did not tell me to create a new subscription. I really did not know what to make of that line since the situation had already resolved itself and it seemed to imply that I was at fault for paying extra money to them when an email requested me to. That kind of touched a nerve, though I admit I might have been overly sensitive, but I just thought that was not a very classy move at the time. After I politely emailed them asking for constructive criticism on what I was supposed to do they quickly apologized and said the payment required email should never have been sent to me but was out of their control. That being said, I hold no ill will toward them and the situation is completely understandable.

Overall, to be honest, this type of service caters to a very specific type of site. I am almost certain that most average people will not notice the difference in speed besides the placebo effect of being told it is the fastest. People who gain the most from signing up for MediaLayer are people who want the best, people who want the fastest and efficient shared servers, and people who pay for name brand and the reliability and support that comes with it. People who are looking for cost effectiveness in terms of space or bandwidth per dollar and people who have a site with non-critical or low intensity applications such as personal blogs would not benefit as much from the service. Although, everyone would benefit from the high level of support and peace of mind that you will not have to change hosts from year to year as MediaLayer has a dominating and consistent presence in the high performance, shared hosting market. I recommend MediaLayer with the reservation that a person who wants to sign up for their service do a real assessment on their site’s actual needs because you might end up overpaying for your needs on an emotional basis (i.e. wanting the best because it is the best) rather than a logical one.

There are a lot of great hosts out there, I have been a part of many of them. I only move because my needs change from time to time as my sites change, my development skills change, and the landscape of web hosting changes. Right now, I regretfully say that I will be changing from MediaLayer, not because there is anything wrong, but because my needs have changed. I will, however, likely come back once I start a site deserving of MediaLayer’s support, performance, and brand.

I have a friend who is with a hosting company who uses Windows Plesk, he is using PHP Fast CGI but it seems like PHP does not have modify rights to the domain folder for example when we create a simple PHP Script to create a text file on the server we get permission denied. However if we create a sub folder on the domain we are then able to create a test file within this directory.

i.e. domainname.com/httpdocs = access denied for php
domainname.com/httpdocs/testfolder = file is created fine.

My friend has contacted the hosting provider and they are saying it is not possible to give php fastcgi modify rights on the httpdocs folder, as a hosting provider myself I find this hard to believe and was wondering if this is a problem with Plesk or the hosting provider just not knowing how to configure their servers properly.

My brother just started a business so we got him a domain and signed up for Hostgator. I built a simple HTML website but we’ve decided it would be better to use a template or site building system so he can update it himself easily (he has no web experience).
The problem is that Hostgator’s template system is clunky and hard to use. Their administration interface is also horrible. To get to the cpanel you have to click through several pages after logging in, including things that are not at all intuitive. It actually takes me several tries, randomly clicking links, every time I log in.

Also, does a host have to support Google Apps in order to host email through Gmail?

So is there a host with a good clean interface, and an intuitive site building system, that supports Google Apps if that is necessary?

I need a webhost. My main concern is my email (which is @mydomain, and is used through google apps) and i cannot afford to loose any of my emails and my current host is starting to get problems…

I just require suitable amount of space and bandwidth, cPanel, no downtimes, unlimited addon domain, and other basic features…

And as always, within a suitable amount…

I need it quick, so any suggestions would be nice, so far i’ve only shortlisted hostgator, but i just have a bad feeling about them.

I have today requested the cancellation of my account under it’s 45day gaurantee. I have recieved the ticket back as ackknowledgement of the cancellation but am still waiting for any action.

This came about from service that I feel that I have recieved. I recently purchased a new baby hosting pack and it was activated. I uploaded my joomla sites which are not that busy by any stretch of the imagination. The sites were slow (still are especially in the backend)

However they never were when I was on an older HG Plan on a different server. I was asked to carry out ping requests etc, but as I said I thought it was more of a slow database mysql thing. Having said that I could be wrong.

I did however in order to save the hassle that I knew would follow asked to be moved back to the old server, aparrently "HG are not in the habbit" of doing this…. I was not asking you to make it a regular occurance simply a matter of saving time. Come on, I mean how long do you want to spend troubleshooting an issue / annoying your customer? Vs an easy fix that build consumer trust??

Anyhow having carried out ping tests and tracert test as required saw no improvement at my end. I have other sites running the same setup with other hosts and I don’t get this issue.

After waiting I have decided that I don’t want to continue in this manor so I have requested and am awaiting for my account to be cancelled and a refund to be issued.

A few things that have wound be up in particular;

The somewhat lax approach by some (not all) of the online chat providers, one I spoke to when I mentiontioned that I was thinking of cancelling rather than trying to assist further just sent the link for cancellation! Strange way to try and keep customers.

2.After I have been told that they think it is an issue with my isp i explained that I get the same issue on 3 different isp providers. (By the way support my ip is dynamic) not sure how you are going to test that when it changes when I log off and reboot???

3. After you have spent a while online chat and have not gotten anywhere they cant open a support ticket for you

4. Made to feel an idiot (not technically) but it almost seems like I am interrupting someones coffee break.

So please can you process my cancellation and refund quickly so I may move elsewhere….

This seems to be the best forum board for honest web host reviews and has already been a huge help in my research so far. This will be my first time purchasing a web host package and would greatly appreciate any advice or opinions on anything I’m about to bring up.
Warning: I ask some stupid, basic questions and some very loose, just-want-to-hear-general-thoughts-on-the-subject type questions. Here goes…

I basically just want a reliable and reasonably priced Shared Hosting package located in the US, that will have enough disk space and bandwidth to host several completely independent sites (each w/ their own domain name).
[Question: Is it common for people to purchase a shared hosting package and use it to launch several smaller-sized, low-traffic, independent websites?]

This is a rough idea of what kinds of websites I would want to produce from this shared hosting package:
- About 4 dynamic websites and a few static websites.
- 2 of the 4 dynamic websites would allow for products to be purchased (via paypal/credit card) and have some type of shopping cart system custom programmed by me. These wouldn’t be geared towards selling a large amount of different things but more specialized. e.g. 1 will sell tshirts/sweatshirts/hats/etc.
- I would expect all 4 dynamic sites to have full user-login/registration systems each with their own Database. This includes editable user profiles..(possible inboxes)..etc.
- 2 of the 4 dynamic sites would have custom programmed forum boards.. even including avatars/signatures/etc.

do you think it is possible to accomplish all of this on just one shared hosting account? even if the sites were getting very low traffic?
Of all the research I’ve done so far my top choice is SharkSpace because it offers 100GB disk space and 1TB bandwidth for its highest Shared Hosting package (Great White). It is offering 50% off and is very good price. Do you think this SharkSpace package could maintain something close to what I described above?
Is there any down sides to SharkSpace that I should be aware of?

If I wanted to have one of my websites allow users to download my free programs, games and other freeware, then I would have to upload those files just like I would any other webpage or script, right? And so those files would take up that precious disk space that these companies give so little of it seems. Is there other ways of doing this?? not including hotlinks.
This just confuses me because I’ve looked at so many shared hosting packages and most don’t give enough disk space to do much more than display text, some images and hold some scripts..and dont give enough bandwidth to much of anything exciting either…
Of course VPNs or dedicated servers could easily handle those kind of sites but I feel like I see smaller, personal sites that offer plenty more videos, games and downloads then could ever fit on those shared host accounts..how? I feel like I’m missing something..

I was on here probably this time last year, I was new to running a server and had lots of questions.

There are always people asking me how my service is and who I use.

To verify, I run www.mk1dubz.com I have had this site up and running for over a year now. It is a small vbulletin forum with a couple of users, actually I think a little over 300 now. I have nothing negative to report about my host stablehost.com

I think I had 1 outage back in August 09, this was a networking issue on the back bone side if I am not mistaken, before I could log a ticket it was back up. I think it was a problem on my side, so that doesn’t really count.

I now just had an issue with mysql engine, I noticed that it failed due to temp space, I immediatly from a remote location logged a ticket with stablehost, before I can even close the page, I received an email from Tyler, he was able to dial in and restart the sql engine and all is well. I need to research what I did wrong or just didn’t do properly but I would have been screwed if I didn’t have him.

There have been a few times where there were some ’security’ updates that were going to be applied, I was given ample notice of possible reboots and downtime.

Every time I asked a question, I have received an answer very quickly and not just some ****** automated response.

I am updated when tickets are closed.

I am happy with the price and billing support

I am more than happy with the technical response time, knowledge and the attention that I receive.

If anyone is looking for a host, this place is it, hands down, I couldn’t have asked for better service.

I am not paid by stablehost, I never met Tyler nor do I get any deals or communciation behind the scene regarding this thread.

I simply get excellent service from these guys and won’t hesitate to put this out there.

OK, my short list got shorter. I’ve found some bad reviews about Inmotion, and their sales person didn’t give me many details on email but wanted me to call him to discuss a "special offer" Maybe it’s OK but I don’t like it. Lunarpages sales response came in late at night (where’s their sales stuff located?!) and email was badly formatted and had a warning on top that several responses may push the ticket to the bottom of the queue; besides, it gave me the ticket link which doesn’t work without registration. I thinks this looks unprofessional.

So now I’ve had offers from LiquidWeb, WiredTree, and also I’ve added KnownHost. I’ve also contacted ServInt and Gigenet but didn’t get any response yet (and I’ve sent inquiries yesterday night)…maybe they don’t need new clients. WiredTree looks most attractive to me at this point, but it’s also most expensive. can you look at all the details below and see if there’s much difference between the offers because I don’t know anything about hardware. Disk space and bandwidth seem to be adequate for our needs in all offers. Thanks a lot in advance.

It seems a bit advanced for me, maybe not as user friendly for a layman as myself. First, I registered my domain with Yahoo 10 days ago. So it seems like I can’t forward it to my Dreamhost because : -Domains may not be transferred within 60 days of their initial registration or their most recent transfer So if I were to temporarily forward my Yahoo domain, it asks me to enter a destination. Maybe a website or two that gives unbiased comparisons of different products, or a list of specific products that have proven to work well for developing pages to be published to a DreamHost website. I’m a web application developer at work but all Microsoft stuff (IIS, Microsoft SQL, Visual Studio 2008, and asp.net using VB), so I’m out of my element (besides the fact that VS 2008 is too complicated and expensive to fit this job). I want to develop a simple / static website for our swim and racquet club. It would mainly consist of some pages of pictures (maybe some video to), a calendar, a newsletter section, and maybe a blog at some point. My plan is that after I have it laid-out that I can get someone at the club to take over the task of updating it, so I’ll need this software to be usable by novices too. I’m hoping that since our site is quite simple, there should be some software out there that’s fairly inexpensive and easy to use that will do the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I had intended to browse the WebHostingBoard forums, tonight, to see what kind of web hosting plans were being offered there, and the link would keep on taking me to a site called Hostaru.com.

After a few seconds of pondering whether my web browser was being hijacked, I did a little additional searching, and it seems that the Hostaru site contains the archive of WebHostingBoard, and that area is now closed and may be deleted in the future.

While I do not mourn the apparent demise of WebHostingBoard, I was curious if the Hostaru site will differ from WebHostingBoard in any notable way? Or if it’s pretty much the same thing under a different name?

The member list for the site currently only lists two user names registered for it (aside from what is found in the archives). One is MikeDVB and the other is Scott Swezey, perhaps the same one found here:

I’m looking for a solid unmanaged VPS. I have several web sites I want to move over, but I’m working on a Drupal project that may lead to tens of thousands of hits a day. I don’t want my server to slow down or give 503 errors when traffic gets high. I’m thinking 512 MB of dedicated memory should be sufficient (running 32-bit Debian 5), but more is always better.

I was going to go with Ramhost after researching here, asking them several questions and running some pings on their servers, but they sold out of server space over the weekend and have an ETA of March/April posted on their web site. My current service is up for renewal in early April and I need some overlap to get my sites properly migrated, make any tweaks and MySQL changes, etc.

I’m considering Fivebean and Burstnet, but at this point I would appreciate any other recommendations. I don’t know how to find the IP addresses to run ping tests on the services I am evaluating either. I have also seen mention of 100 mbps vs 10 mbps. What does this mean and how do find those specs on a provider?

One off-putting item about Burstnet was the statement I found when I clicked on the BASIC MANAGED link. It seems almost everything is billed at $65/hour, even if your site gets hacked and they simply re-install your basic setup and you rebuild the rest from your own backups. On the flip side, Ramhost was very patient and helpful, even though I was just asking pre-sales questions.

I would appreciate any feedback from other members about their experiences with various VPS providers.

Post Reply? i’m not sure if my subject line is going to help me any, but here’s the long story. i’m a real n00b, so i would appreciate any help i can get, but please make sure to use lamens terms with me as i have no idea what i’m doing. okay, so, i have webspace with dreamhost. i’ve had it for a couple years and i used run a very basic website, but i let that domain expire. because i wanted to keep the same domain name and that wasn’t available, i purchased it as a .ca domain from netfirms. (so instead of mydomain.com, i now own mydomain.ca) and i’ve successfully transferred it over to be hosted at dreamhost (so when i go into ‘manage domains’ in my dreamhost webpanel, it says that mydomain.ca is full hosted) so now, i would like to be able to have a blog on my site. i dont want it to be found at www.mydomain.ca, but rather at blog.mydomain.ca (because i dont want it to be the main focus of the site, but rather as a part of the site) so i went and created that subdomain (blog.mydomain.ca) in the netfirms web panel, hoping i could link up my blog there. since i couldnt figure out how to do it, i emailed netfirms to ask their help and their reply was this: “Your CNAME record on Netfirms will not work until the nameservers are pointing to us. Since they are still pointing to dreamhost already, you will need to contact them to add CNAME record for your subdomin.” so now I’m confused as to what to do. 1. do i have to transfer the subdomain of blog.mydomain.ca, even though mydomain.ca is already full transferred? because i’d rather not have to pay more if i dont need to. the reason why i made the subdomain in the first place was because while i work on the actual website, i’d like people to be able to visit the blog. so eventually, when the site is finished, visitors to mydomain.ca will see my site, and should they wish to go to my blog, i can have a link up to blog.mydomain.ca and everything will remain untouched so i dont have to play around with coding or CNAMEs etc. 2. is there a preferred blog ‘host’ (i’m not sure if that’s the correct term) to use with a dreamhost account? currently my blog is set up with blogspot but i havent really done anything aside from create the account. if this whole thing can be done easier with another ‘host’, then i’m all for it. i.e. is wordpress any better for this? sooooooo.. that’s my story. i hope that it made sense. i reread it and it makes sense to me, but if it doesnt to any person who reads this, please please please do let me know and i will reexplain as best as i can. please please please help me & thank you sooooooooooooooo much in advance to anyone who can shed the littlest of light on this situation. xoxox mandice

I’m sure I *used* to know how to do this, but how do I setup the blog so that it is a “seamless” part of the existing Web site in a subdirectory? For example: I have www.mysite.com. This connects to the existing external Web site. I want the blog to show up on www.mysite.com/blog and have it go to the WordPress blog hosted on Dreamhost. Furthermore, the site should never leave the mysite.com domain - it should look entirely like it’s all one universal site. I could go the subdomain route, but would rather not, for SEO purposes.

Email and chat is not an issue and with quick turn around for email I might add but phone support is another as the staffing is not there.

Few months ago I started looking for a VPS provider but had 2 not so good experiences. One didn´t answer my questions and the other one didn´t help with a problem after ordering. I decided to put my plan on hold.

But I often checked the shared hosting offers because I also wanted to start a website. (Note: I am more or less beginner.)

Before ordering
This offer was interesting so I opened a ticket on Angeix´ website to ask some additional questions.
Their support responded quickly, very friendly and 100% satisfying.
They did everything to show me that my decision to choose Angeix would be good.

Ordering
The next evening I decided to order a package. I had a problem while ordering (must be in my genes :blush: ) but the live support was online and helped me within seconds.

The package was setup within minutes after payment on the weekend.
The welcome email was very detailed and contained all the information I needed to start and for the moment my domain would start working with their nameservers.

Other positives
A PHP option was not the way I needed it to be and technical support changed it quickly when I asked for it (on sunday!).

Live support is online often.

For me it feels that these guys know what they are doing.

Negatives
I feel bad when I contact the support because even when my ticket is on low priority they answer very fast
And I feel I pay not enough for such a great service :blush:

I am very happy with my choice and I will post more feedback in some weeks.

For now I highly recommend Angeix! :agree:

I switched my domain over to justhost.com the other week and it doesn’t seem to have worked. I cannot access my cpanel like I can on my other newer site which I registered on justhost and my site still relies on the older hosting company’s servers. How can I tell? well for one thing my site still goes down every night for about 20 minutes… Although my other newer one doesn’t.

I’m thinking of getting Host Gator at $10 per mo. Baby plan

I’m here because I need some help with choosing my hosting. I know there are many bad host experience out there and I’m trying exactly to avoid that. I know that you bunch of experts here who have experience in hosting and reviews can be of great help after reading a bunch of your post while inquiring about peachydandy.
I’ve done a lot of research and narroed it down to a few possible host hoping could you please tell me your experience with it alternatively please provide any good hosts which you believe is good yet affordable. I ordered a dedicated server from CoreNetworks.net a little over a month ago. I placed my order on a Sunday morning, and even though they did not promise to set up any hardware on a weekend, my box was up and ready on the same day. That was a pleasant surprise.

I chose the do-it-yourself setup option: They attach an IP KVM to your server, mount a disk image to act as a usb cdrom, and there you go, you can set up the box yourself any way you want. No back-and-forth with support about partitioning or anything. I loved that!

They will install a bunch of OSs for you automatically, but if you prefer things done your own way or you need an OS image not on the list, with these guys you are not out of luck.

I appreciate the option of having full control over the box when I need it. I know that if I ever render my box unbootable in the future, I’ll have them attach the KVM and I’ll fix it, as if I had physical access to it. That sort of control over dedicated boxes has become quite rare nowadays since serial consoles went out of fashion in the industry.

Their support team was extremely responsive: My reverse DNS update request was handled 4 minutes after I had opened the ticket.

That gives me the warm and fuzzy confidence that if I need their help in an emergency, they will be responsive.

A week after I had set-up my server, one of the support representatives emailed me to ask me if everything was going well!

And their cheapest server is $30/month! That is less than a VPS with comparable specs.

Conclusion: Professional and competent. The service is exactly what I have been looking for in a dedicated hosting provider.

Hi there.

But to rephrase:

I have a website that breaks all TOS in that it could potentially promote harm. I do not care to get into specifics of what I sell, but its pretty "light" and isn’t anything near child porn, porn, satanism, racism, hacking, or anything like that.

BUT — I am sure if godaddy (my current host) found out, they’d not like it so much. (Strangely I’ve ran the site for over 3 years and have never had Godaddy mention it to me)

SO heres an update:

So, after consulting with a guy I met online, I’ve decided to move it to Amsterdam via a VPS host called Santrex.net. He installed software on it for me, and we got it all set up.

He also instructed me to buy a fresh domain somewhere to create nameservers. So now my site will point to the new domain which will, I guess, point to the new mirror site that I set up santrex.net.

But when I did a whois hosting thing on the test site he set up, it said something about Ecatel. And when I looked up Ecatel, I found some words online that said they are bad. And when I talked to this guy, he also said that it connects via the Ecatel datacenter. He agreed that it is bad and that its one of the #1 spammers in the world.

I trust this guy, and I think hes just trying to help. But I am now nervous about moving the site over.

My questions are this:

1.) If I host near Ecatel or anything shady, will that effect my SEO rankings?

2.) Is this guy leading me on the right path? Obviously I do not know completely what I am doing here.

3.) Is there an easier way to do this?

4.) If Godaddy ever had a complaint, could they freeze me from using my DOMAIN since I registered it thru them? If so, how can I move it?

5.) Is there anyone out there who would let me host it with them? If so, PM Me.

6.) From what I understand, I just set the thing up remotely as a mirror site, and then point the nameserver stuff at it, and it switches over, right?

Hello. I’m going to put up a video sharing site utilizing osTube, but don’t know which dedicated hosting company or package to go with. Have any of you, with a similar type of site, had a good experience with ServerPoint, Pacific Rack, ImageLeet, Liquid Web, The Planet, Soft Layer, 10tb or the like? Or do you have any suggestions?

Most of the videos streamed would be @ 5mb-15mb and our budget is $100-$225/mo.

I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you in advance.

I have a site that ranks #1 on google for a key term.

If I move the site to Amsterdam, to a less reputable web-host (I am currently with Godaddy) is there ANY risk of SERP loss?

This is my review of Turnkey Internet’s VPS Hosting.

MY SETUP
Windows Server 2008 Std.
2 CPU’s
40GB HDD
4GB RAM
10mbps internet connection
4TB Bandwidth

THE ORDER:
I ordered my VPS from them Sun, Feb 14, 2010 at 11:18 PM and I received the email from them on Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 10:55 AM letting me know my VPS has been setup. As soon as I got my VPS I started installing all of the usual software that I use. DotNetPanel, hMailServer, DNS, TFS, MySQL MS-SQL 2008.

THE SUPPORT:
I can say that the support from them has been exceptional. I have had a couple of problems getting getting things going smoothly. One of the first problems I ran into was I screwed up my vps container while trying to get Team Foundation Server 2010 installed.

They where very quick to offer support and get my VPS problems solved. From what it looked like to me was TFS installed some updates that Virtuozzo did not like with corrupted the container.

They opened up a support tick with parallels and gave me another VPS to use while they got the problem resolved. They had the new vps setup for me in just a few hours and I was able to get that up and running quickly. The following day they have resolved the issue with my last VPS and gave me access to it so I could retrieve my files from it.

The following day I managed to break my VPS yet again by accidentally uninstalling parallels tools which I noticed right away as I uninstalled it. Again I opened up a support ticket and within a hour I had my VPS back online and running.

FINAL THOUGHTS
At fist I was very skeptical about their offer that I found in the VPS Offer section of WHT but since I’m only using the VPS to host personal websites and for software development I figured there was nothing to lose but a little bit of my time if things did not work out. After dealing with them over the past few weeks I can say I am very happy with my decision to give them a try. So far my VPS has been running great and has all of the bells and whistles that I wanted at a price that is a steal.

I have been here going on 2 years and have had VERY LITTLE problems. I came in from a previously wonderful hosting company that went down the drain after opening VoIP service there. After some slight issues on the transfer, everything has gone smooth and the support has been amazing here. I would recommend this service to anyone.

Here is the slight exception, there are absolutely no incentives for renewing customers. I can understand not doing it for monthly or maybe even yearly renewals, but for someone who signs up for 2 years or more there should be some kind of slight discount given.

The reason I bring this up is because apparently you can cancel and then sign up as a new customer now and get the BIG discounts with a slight downtime. Please help out those of us who would LIKE to stay? Even if its just a little bit.:banghead:
