This is a totally impartial review of Geek Storage, we don't recommend hosts just to make money from you. Let us help you choose a reliable host that suits your needs.
Geek Storage Interview
We caught up with the head geek over at Geek Storage, Jay & asked him a few questions:
Where are your servers located (Geographically)?
We have servers located in Los Angeles, CA and Chicago, IL.
What is your average support ticket response time?
We make every effort to respond to all issues received as quickly as possible. Response time is based off the priority of the ticket, which urgent issues (such as unavailable service, etc.) being responded to within 15 minutes, on average. Low priority support tickets have a resolution time of generally 2-4 hours.
Do your support staff work at the datacenter, or remotely?
We work closely with technicians employed by the data center, and our own remote technicians, to resolve any issues that arise.
What is your average monthly uptime percentage (i.e. 99.9%)?
We average, across all of our servers, 99.9% uptime. Most of our servers have been seeing 100% uptime for the last year.
How do you communicate downtime, outages & hardware issues with your customers?
We communicate any maintenance, downtime, outages & hardware issues to our geeks directly by posting a notice in our designated Network Announcements section of Geekmunity (our community forums). In addition to this announcement, we will contact our geeks by e-mail if the severity of the downtime calls for an extended period of time.
How well do you handle Traffic Spikes (i.e. Digg.com)?
We will do everything we can to accommodate a user receiving a larger-than-normal amount of traffic. We have been known to temporarily move a shared hosting user to a dedicated server for a short period of time. VPS and dedicated server users can be scaled, rather easily, to adjust to an increase in traffic.
Do you have measures to accommodate this or do you make the site unavailable?
We would only disable a website if it is adversely degrading the performance of other users on the same server.
What measures do you have in place to help users scale their hosting needs with demand?
We regularly scale geeks from shared to reseller, reseller to VPS, VPS to dedicated, etc. It is our goal to help our geeks grow and part of this is scaling their hosting solution to meet their needs. Migrating to our various services requires no downtime and can be performed by Geek Support for the geek.
On a Shared Node or VPS Node how many users do you tend to allow?
We do not place a set limitation of the number of users for both shared, reseller and VPS hosting. We populate servers in increments, allowing several months of growth time, before determining if a server could handle more geeks. This process is constantly evaluated to ensure that a server isn’t overloaded and that an optimum hosting environment is present on all of our servers.
Some hosts offer Burst RAM & others prefer just to offer Guaranteed. Which solution do you offer & why?
We offer burstable RAM on our VPS offerings. We believe that if the RAM is available, our geeks should have the opportunity to use it. Given that our VPS nodes have a minimum of 32 GB of RAM and that our nodes aren’t overloaded, our geeks are usually able to utilize their burstable RAM, when needed.
In 100 words or less, why should our readers host with you?
We have been hosting websites since 2002 and started GeekStorage with one thing in mind… to build the best internet playground for both you and your website. We know that guaranteed performance backed up by “Powered by Geek” support ensures you are with the best.

Everything was great except for the respond time for support. Setup of a shared account takes more than 24hours. What the hell is that.
