I have several sites hosted with a well regarded $5/mo host.

Occasionally, something will change. One one site things got weird a few years ago. In response to a ticket they told me that I had my .htaccess wrong. After some coaxing they told me what to do and it got fixed. A long time time later, the same thing happened. I got exactly the same response, and so changed the htaccess again. Well about a year later the same problem came up a third time. This time they told me to correct the file, and they provided yet another correction. On checking my old records, the latest correction they offered was to put it back to an earlier version, which they had previously told me was NG.

I know nothing about what happens on a hosting server, so have no idea what the problem was, but it was not a good experience.

Now I have a suspicion that a similar thing has just happened on a different site. On this site I had zen-cart and mailman loaded and working fine. Sometime in the last two weeks both zen-cart and mailman stopped working. Zen-cart returns a page that looks like a combo of php code and text instructions. Mailman does not send out mails.

My question is. Is this something that happens with budget hosts, and do I need hosting of a higher quality.

Any help with this would be appreciated.
