I’ve been with HostGator for about 8 months or so. Aside from a few issues I had in the first week, HostGator gave me all I could have wanted and more from a webhost. Having said that, the last month has revealed a lot about HostGator to me. I’ve experienced three separate issues in the last two weeks or so.

1. Frequent database errors. This ultimately turned about to be the result of an abusive user on the server, but until that person was discovered, the technicians on the live chat kept telling me that my site had coding errors and to optimize my tables. I gave them indisputable evidence that the errors were of HostGator’s fault, but they insisted it was my error.

2. Inconsistent load times. Sometimes, my sites will open very fast, but every 5-10 clicks or so, it will take 5-15 seconds for a page to load. This is a pain on a message board where many clicks are made. After going into the live chat, they told me to optimize my tables. Deja vu? Obviously that’s not the problem. I already optimized my tables one week ago when I was trying to fix the last problem. Furthermore, the fact that it’s happening on three different sites using four different softwares should indicate that it’s a host issue.

3. Downtime today. Still trying to figure out what’s going on, but my site’s been down for over 45 minutes. Livechat has been very slow to respond because they don’t know what’s going on either. For the record, I don’t blame the live chat support people at all. They do very well given the circumstances.

I don’t want to have to make a hosting change. Transferring is a royal pain, but I’m very close to giving up on the Gator. I shouldn’t have these types of frequent problems, and most importantly, when these problems do arise, have some accountability. Don’t tell me the problems are the result of my coding error, especially when I give you clear evidence that it is not. These are the type of problems I expect to receive on a free or discount host; not one which costs 10 dollars a month.

I should have known that anything with the word "Gator" in it would cause me trouble.
