This is a totally impartial review of Peer1, we don't recommend hosts just to make money from you. Let us help you choose a reliable host that suits your needs.
Peer1 Interview
We caught up with Craig from Peer1 who answered our standard 10 questions about their hosting services:
Where are your servers located (Geographically)?
Our dedicated servers are located in Atlanta, Miami, and Fremont, CA. Colocated servers are located in Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, San Jose, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, and Miami.
What is your average support ticket response time?
Any support tickets are handled by our FirstCall Support system meaning that the first line of defense are highly qualified, highly trained support personnel who can handle most issues… not a customer service person who is there to simply report an issue and pass it on. More info: http://www.peer1.com/hosting/support.php . Our SLA for a server reboot is less than 30 minutes and for any hardware failure is less than 1 hour.
Do your support staff work at the datacenter, or remotely?
On Site
What is your average monthly uptime percentage (i.e. 99.9%)?
100%
How do you communicate downtime, outages & hardware issues with your customers?
If applicable, through email with info also being accessible through our online ticketing system.
How well do you handle Traffic Spikes (i.e. Digg.com)? Do you have measures to accomodate this or do you make the site unavailable?
On the front end, we will build your solution based on your expected traffic so traffic spikes should already be accounted for. We always monitor our network. More details about our network: http://www.peer1.com/infrastructure/network.php . Also see #7.
What measures do you have in place to help users scale their hosting needs with demand?
Clustering, High Availability, SAN, load balancing, high availability firewalls, CDN.
On a Shared Node or VPS Node how many users do you tend to allow?
Not Applicable. The only shared product we offer are shared load balancers which can handle 5 Million concurrent users. As soon as traffic on those load balancers reaches 50% of capacity, we deploy 2 more load balancers.
Some hosts offer Burst RAM & others prefer just to offer Guaranteed. Which solution do you offer & why?
We only offer dedicated servers because they offer considerably better performance than a shared environment like VPS. For a critical application, it makes more sense to NOT share server resources with other unknown applications so we do not offer that solution.
