Many people bought into it just as children believe in the tooth fairy. Now, the pagerank orgy is over and people are still looking for the tooth fairy. I have to also agree that pagerank is flawed. I own a few phpLD directories and even now there are PR3's with the whole Google mess. However, they took almost all of my backlinks away. Google show a whole total of ten backlinks for for one of my PR3 directories, yet it is still a PR3. Doesn't make any sense to me, unless it is way way to starve directory owners out of business. I never put all of my eggs in one basket, so I had other things going on for web traffic like forums, social networking, commenting on blogs related to my niche and a few other things. I still get people submitting for a site review and that is good for me. Therefore, I spend a large amount of time on SEO so my client's web listing rank high in the search engines. Seems to be working for me, plus the half dozen SEO companies which submit their clients sites to my two larger directories.
