Follow thousands of people

Pretty straight forward, just follow as many people as you can. If you’re interesting enough a certain percentage will follow you back, I’ve noticed a 10% ratio here, a bit higher if you’re a ‘beautiful woman’ *coughs*

Tweet famous people

There’s a lot of famous people on twitter now with A LOT of followers. If you can somehow get them to tweet back at you then you’ve got a lot of potential traffic hitting your twitter profile. Creativity is the key here.

Get something viral happening that’s re-tweetable

If you can create something that’s easily re-tweetable but makes you cash then you’re onto a winner. The sitelink fail was a small example of something. I had less that 20 followers when I tweeted it, imagine if I had thousands?

Use the Twitter API to create an app (i.e. twittercounter)

I saw an interesting stat that mentioned twitter gets roughly 10x more traffic via their API than the actual web service. There’s a huge market out there for interesting apps & a huge market to profit from it. This is probably the most lucrative point out of the 5. For example, no-one is really doing twitter backgrounds well yet?

Use twitter for new product/website launches

With plenty of followers you can really give a new website/idea a very nice initial boost or get the blogosphere talking. A trend I’ve noticed is that twitter users love useful apps, oh & twitter related apps :P

Links are masked anyways

All affiliate links get masked through tinyurl anyways, not entirely sure if twitter plans to address this. Hell if they were really smart they could replace all affiliate codes with their own. Did I just come up with the first real revenue idea for Twitter? ;)

Great tips about profiting from Twitter. I noticed though that you are not practicing this part “Follow thousands of people” and especially not adding a lot of your followers. I find that when you reciprocate all of a sudden someone else adds you in. Of course you can’t reciprocate everyone as some may be just there to spam or show their graphic pic :)

6. Get Customers/Leads by answering questions and providing help.

I’ve gained at least 20 leads by just casually answering people’s questions in my related niche. Now I haven’t banked yet, but these people are subscribed to my list – and everyone knows that “the money is in the list.”

I’m thinking of a twitter app, but maybe just building out my sites and tweeting more is better in the long run.

Twitter definitely offers money making potential. However using affiliate links directly in twitter is kinda frowned upon, Ive seen lots of blog posts debating this. Unless its contextual and spawns from a conversation, e.g. one of your followers asking “where can I buy xy?”. Also, one needs to keep in mind that affiliate networks such as Ebay or Amazon more than likely need to give you extra authoorization when using your existing campaign for twitter. Amazon told me so directly whereas Ebay I’m still waiting for an answer after several weeks. Mabye they dont know what to make of it all?

But how do you get all your readers you read your tweets?

Pacc's Adventures 27. May 2009, 9:33 pm

I was on Twitter for four days, I had a nice number of followers and about 10% more people I was following. It was doing pretty well until I received notice that my account was being suspended for “strange activity”.

I have attempted to challenge the suspension, but I’ve not been told what “strange activity” I was apparently partaking in. So far all I’ve found out is that it an account grows too quickly it might or might not be suspended.

Cheap Review Sites 07. Jun 2009, 8:25 am

I did this only once, with somewhat less than 1000 followers. I promoted a ClickBank product.

Guess what? I got ~$40 the next morning.

Some really nice tips there Stuart, also the site links search query brings no results on Twitter right now.
