Make your Blog Multilingual & Increase Traffic by 200%
22. Jan 2007 | 12 Comments
Some of you may have noticed that at the bottom of the blog I’ve got various flags for different languages. I implemented a really nice multilingual translation plugin for wordpress, it basically makes a complete mirror of your whole site in all the languages you select.
So now I’ve gone from 250 pages indexed to over 1,650 indexed pages. I’m ranking for words in other languages that I wouldn’t have ranked on naturally in the normal serps.
I’ve seen traffic DOUBLE inside 2 weeks. Not forgetting that it’ll also take time for the new lanauges to start ranking.
The plugin translates into the following languages:
- German
- Spanish
- French
- Italian
- Portuguese
- English
- Japanese
- Chinese
- Korean
I’m not entirely sure how good the translations are, you can choose a number of different sources to pull them from. It’s not really a huge issue for me though as I’m opening up the possibility of reaching a far wider audience of people than just the english speakers.
The plugin is easy to install & they customise it fully for your blog. It costs $30, but imo for me it’s been money well spent. Especially when I look at my feed subscribers going up steadily ![]()

hi:
I speak and write good Chinese, and a little Japanese.
Frankly, the chinese translation to your blog is pretty laughable. sure this plug-in can increase the traffic but I doubt if those foreign traffic would convert.
my $0.02.
Thanks for the tip, most auto-translaters are not up to scratch and I doubt this is any better - Im going to give it a go on my site though, Ill let you know how I get on.
Awesome tip
thanks man
ok ive tried multilingual blogging using babelfish for one of my blogs http://aglocochina.blogspot.com lets see if it gets some traffic ![]()
Stuart, have you noticed that the plugin boosts page views but not unique visitors?
Any clue on the reason?
I speak italian as my main language. Your site’s italian translation doesn’t make any sense but is humorous ![]()
Don’t expect many italian visitors too ![]()
my 2 c.
even if the translation sucks, shouldn’t the fact that you now have more indexed pages, boost your page ranking?
I’ve been thinking about ways to leverage other languages for traffic as well especially after reading Technorati’s recent State of the Blogosphere indicating that Japanese accounted for the greatest number of blog posts in Q4 2006. I don’t speak Japanese but I do speak Spanish and I can see some problems with these translators that might limit their impact. On the other hand, isn’t it somewhat likely that readers who go to the trouble of using translators would expect some problems?
this is awesome!

Of course it boosts unique visitors as you’re getting more & more pages indexed. If it boosted page views only that would mean your existing visitors would be looking at more pages; which they aren’t because the translate flags are hidden at the bottom of the blog
